Glad you made it out well without hitting anything, to be honest. I also take advantage of the 95/395 HOV, which makes commuting a breeze and don't feel comfortable riding without gear, so I use icon field armor knee guards under dress pants. It's a bit of a hassle and you can't wear fit pants (bought 2nd set of dress pants for commuting) but worth it for peace of mind. I have also seen those black bases laying out on the road on various highways.
