so the other day i had to take a 100 mile r/t on the bike during work. since i wasn't planning on a long ride this day, i didn't have any ear plugs with me.

while on the highway, i noticed a whining noise at speed which i had never noticed before. noise begins at 5000-5500 rpm (about 60 mph indicated in 6th) and increases in pitch as engine speed increases.

noise disappears if clutch is engaged while moving, and doesn't appear when revving engine while stopped.

so, maybe this is normal driveline noise that i just never noticed because i typically ride with earplugs, a budding transmission issue, or something else?

any thoughts?

Well today is a good day. Everything worked out perfect. Thanks a lot OTB on the shipping idea. Worked out great and quick.

I just graduated with my MS in Engineering Management from Drexel University and I actually go to walk on June 15th. I talked to the wife and let her know what I wanted as a graduation gift to myself. I have been wanting a Supermoto for literally 2 years. Got super close to getting one back in August(08 KTM 690 SMC) but my dad talked me out of it because I was in the middle of paying for wedding stuff and so on. Guess it wasn't a bad idea..it actually helped me out not to get it at that time.

Long story short, the wife approved and gave some suggestions on where to put it and store it as I was originally thinking about putting a slab of concrete under the deck and putting it there but she disapproved of that and said "People crazy...they will still your ish...you put it in the garage and I will just deal with the parking". Since I already have the R1 it was going to basically make the side wall all mine with my toys. She said its ok. AWESOME.

Found this 08 Aprilia SXV 550 in Michigan with 1900 miles purchased by original owner at Honda East an Ape dealer. Fully stock other than having them de-restrict it and flash a new map and had them update the oil pressure sensor. Seller was top notch, sent extra oil(both of them, it takes two), two extra oil filters, all paperwork from Honda East, extra stickers, and all parts that they gave him after having it de-restricted.

It got delivered this morning...its my sunshine on this rainy day. Welcome home "IAMBLK" - thats what my tag says.

I've been using the Pilot Power 2CT. They're done now.

I'm racing this year, and I need a real race tire. Yes I have warmers

So what is Michelin's full race DOT tire now? Is it the Power CUP? Is it the Power Super Sport? What's the difference between the two? How do they compare to the Power ONE?

I'll be looking at some take offs this weekend. How old is too old(for Power Ones)? How do I know it's too used up for me to race on?

Now what about the SuperCorsa SC2 tire?

I also have a chance to get some slicks too. Should I?

All the zippers work, the velcro is good, and I don't see any tears in it. It is a size large and is perfect for wearing under a jersey for either motocross or supermoto. I would like to get $50 for it, but I'm open to reasonable offers or trades for other moto related stuff.

In the next 30-90 days, we will be moving to Nebraska.
I have never moved further then about 100 miles.

Any hints or tips, based on other's experiences will greatly help.
I have a lot of questions...
Do you hire movers?
Do you move your self and rent a big U-Haul?
Do we drive the car? tow the car?
Do I trailer the bike? ride it? put it in the moving truck?
etc etc etc

All kinds of questions.

Thanks

I NEED a kickstand more importantly and ASAP cause my forks are going in for a rebuild and I will be raising everything while those are in the shop. I know they're on ebay and what not I just wanted to see if anyone has one laying around on here so I can snag it up faster.

As for the mirrors I don't need them necessarily as fast but hate these bar end crg's since I use my mirrors so often..

Thanks in advance everyone!

I'm thinking I might give dirt a go this fall or next spring, mainly interested in woods riding, and so I was wondering what I should be looking for....

I'm thinking I might give dirt a go this fall or next spring, mainly interested in woods riding, and so I was wondering what I should be looking for. I'm 5'10, 155 and my only experience off-road is messing around a few times with my old DRZ sumo (and MTB'ing for what that's worth).

Short of not having the right wheels\tires, I actually thought the DRZ wasn't too bad. I thought it had good low end and the suspension seemed to do well. That said, I could do less weight.

Given that experience, I had a few thoughts.

pick up a WR250R. I feel like that's still heavy and it's expensive, but it's also street legal, which would be cool to just go explore on. It also could serve as a backup street bike, which would be nice to have. Alternatively, just get the full on dirt version or another 250 four stroke and drop some weight. too much for beginner?

get a CRF150f. It's lighter, cheap, and I could get in on some all sports action in the winter. I've never ridden one, but I'm thinking it might be too little power and the suspension doesn't look all that great. There is the 150r option, but is that too much? What would I have to do to switch between woods and all sports set up?

125 two stroke. Never ridden a two stroke, but I like simple and I like light weight. I figure it might be harder to learn on, but that means I'm learning something, right? too much?

TTR or Honda 230. Cheap, seems like power would be ok for me, but I'm wondering about the steel frame (weight) and suspension.

Any input is much appreciated. If there's something I'm not thinking about, let me know.

so it won't be too long before I need a new clutch on my 848evo (still have the stock non-slipper). i'm considering the ducati's dry slipper, but i'm wondering if there's a way to adjust the spring tension so you don't get arm pump after riding for like 2 minutes LOL i've tested a couple but haven't ever worked with a dry clutch before so i'm not sure if there are different spring rates (such as with suspension) or if those springs are only in one spring rate or the clutch won't properly function. either way just lookin for a couple of ya other duc owners who hopefully have dry clutches to gimme some good advice. and pls don't hate if this has been posted before... i looked and didn't find anything.
thanks!

House seller left this in the basement, and I don't want it. It is in great condition but is not wood--it's particle board. This is two pieces, an upper and lower. The split is at the "countertop" so in fact you can use it without the top.

There are two nice mirrors that slide into the back of the upper section. and those mirrors are included. The upper piece has a built-in light in the top center and wine glass groves/holders there too. There is a "tray" that extends out of the smaller compartment in the lower piece, above the cabinet doors. There is a drawer, obviously, as well as a place to hold a small mini fridge.

It's not bad--I just don't like the styling myself.

Looking to get $50 for pick-up, $75 delivered within 50 miles. I'm in Ellicott City, just off of 99 very near where 29 ends. Thanks for looking!

Handy front pin stand, works fine, but I'd only use it with a good rear stand, not by itself, it can be kinda wobbly. You should get the set together, or have a good rear stand of your own: $30

I am a contractor.
I commute 75+ miles a day to the IRS facility in Lanham MD.

Today I get to the office, only to be turned away at the gate after being told that the "contractor lot is full, and that contractor motorcycles will no longer be allowed to park in the motorcycle parking". It would seem that it is now reserved for Gov't employees only.

There are approx 30 motorcycles parking spots. There are never more than 6 motorcycles that park there. 4 of them are contractor bikes.

This is so frustrating. Not only were the contractors not made aware of this ahead of time, but it is such a waste! Not only are the folks who drive cars going to be pissed that in a lot that is already not large enough, motorcycles are now taking up valuable parking spots (where they are required to park one bike to a space).

I really need off this contract.

After lots of anticipation, I'm finally getting my street bike back tomorrow thanks to Redlevel. So to celebrate, I'm planning a ride for next Saturday leaving from Rockville, MD. Since I barely rode on the street last season, this will be a chill pace ride (5-10 over max) and 2-up friendly. There will be NO passing on the double yellow and NO getting chased by the cops. :D

Date: Saturday, June 1st, 2013, weather permitting.

Time: Meet-up at 10:30am, rolling out by 11am SHARP.

Location: Montgomery Shell
1250 W. Montgomery Ave.
Rockville, MD 20850

Pace: Chill/2-up friendly

Duration: 3-4 hrs depending including lunch

Post up if you plan on attending or have any questions. Please note: it's been a while since I've been on these roads and a while since I've led a ride. I may be a little rusty. You've been warned. :doublefinger:

April 20-21 2013 Summit Point Raceway, WV

The new season is here and we will be quite busy in 2013. This first event for us was sanctioned by WERA. Due to scheduling issues, we will be running a good bit with these folks this year. We will still do two events with CCS but WERA fits us best for 2013.

This event would be a “Twin-Sprint” configuration which means all the races are crammed into one day instead of two and that day is duplicated. Bottom line, we run twice as many races as a normal weekend.

Winter had been quite busy with maintenance for the race bikes and the building of a new 650cc race engine. Finishing up a week or two prior, the engine was installed and put on the dyno to jet the carbs for the new PowerMist fuel we will use this year. PowerMist has taken on support of our team for 2013 and an eval report will follow after we have some time with the new fuel. The dyno work did not go as planned and after several mishaps on the machine and lasting late into the night, we were satisfied with the jetting.

Getting the new (used 2001) RV to the track made me nervous because of the additional size but all went well and we found a good pit spot. Everything was a new learning experience when setting up. We had one of Luke’s brothers, William Sayre, with us and he enrolled in the MARRC Cornerworker School and not only graduated but put in the time to work the whole weekend! Great job!

Giving some Scrappy lovin’.

We unpacked the two SV650s, completed set-up and were ready to go. When it came time to suit up for first practice, I received a rude awakening. I could not zip my leathers! The winter months had been a bit hard on the body and I had gained a few pounds. Well, maybe more than a few. With the help of the crew, the zipper went up and the leather girdle was now installed and very uncomfortable. Out for first practice I went. I wanted to take it easy as I had not ridden this bike or on the track since September. It was also very cold. The session went well but I had noticed the water temp had not risen very much due to the ambient temp so we added a nice cardboard wind blocker to the radiator for round two. Well, round two was a bit of a disaster. Part way through practice, the brand new engine let go. It did not cause a crash and we thank God for that.

After transferring the dry set-up to the other bike, we were ready for racing to begin. We were entered in F2 and Lightweight Twins Superbike both days. The first race, LWTSB, went well. I had a great start and ended up 3rd. This race was hard fought with the likes of David Stauffer (#315). In fact, after passing each other back and forth a few times, he drafted me on the run to the finish and only edged me out of second place by .03 of a second. The second race, F2, went a bit better. It all started with a great launch from the flag but somehow, going into T1 I was passed by Sean Mueller (#505) and came out in P2. If this was not disheartening enough, I was passed again in T3 by my buddy David and was now running 3rd! There I stayed for two more laps as I regained my composure and started to pick up my pace. I was braking later, accelerating sooner, and doing anything and everything I could to close the gap to David. Then, on lap three, David made it past Sean into the lead. I had to make a move. So on lap four, I did and got by Sean as well. David had opened up a bit of a gap and it took two more laps to catch him. On lap seven, I passed him on the brakes into T1 and ran! I knew from earlier that I would have to have a bit of a gap to prevent his draft pass to the flag. I held him off for the last two laps and took the checkered for the first win of the season! Winning is always a great way to end the day and today was no exception. Victory, no matter what you are doing, reaffirms you are doing things right. It’s like that feeling you get when you turn away from sin and do the right thing in the eyes of God. It just feels good and you know you are in the right place.

Running in third but headed for the win…

Victory is sweet!

Our win on Saturday left us with a choice to make. I consulted with Luke, our Crew Chief, and we were really hung up on the decision about tires. We had run practice and our two Saturday races on tires that were used last September at VIR. They were old, it was cold and our lap times were about 2-3 seconds off where they should have been (but, so were everyone’s). I saw that David had put on new tires and we didn’t know if we should do the same. Tires are expensive and the Bridgestone money that could follow would require high finishes. If not, we would just be tossing away money. In the end, we chose to keep the old tires on for another day (and then have them for practice in May) rather than spend the money for new ones. With the very cold track temps, it was unlikely that I would be comfortable pushing the bike any harder, even with fresh rubber.
William Sayre, qualified cornerworker.

Saturday evening found me at the MARRC Executive Committee meeting. We discussed some very good issues and they are available in the published minutes at Mid-Atlantic Road Racing Club. While I was at the meeting, the crew was prepping the pit for Sunday’s events. It was very chilly outside, I had no warm clothes and most everyone was either gone or in their campers etc so we did not walk around like we usually do. We retired to the RV with the furnace on, watched a movie and went to sleep.

Sunday morning came too early as usual and it was even colder than Saturday. We were missing Cecilia from the crew as she had a work commitment at home. Denise went out to perform her second morning of breakfast preparation for the famished MARRC cornerworkers. She has become quite a hit with them as they can tell she really cares about helping them start their day right. After cooking for MARRC, Denise fired up our pit kitchen and was able to bless many others with a no-charge breakfast courtesy of CSBA Racing.

BACON!

We skipped practice as the track surface was too cold to trust. We all attended chapel service provided by Mark Merical. It was a good sermon on James chapter one. Throughout the weekend, we did have several opportunities to speak with various folks about our operation. We had fellow Brothers in Christ stop by to encourage as well as curious onlookers. Luke had a fairly long conversation with a young man in particular whom we are praying for now.

Helping our competition after a crash, it’s just how we roll.

We had the same two races that went off on Saturday but the results were a bit different. We took 4th in the LWT SB race and another 3rd in F2. After the racing was over, we packed up the RV, helped Quentin pack up his tire kit and went to dinner at our traditional post-race Chinese buffet.

The “Bridgestone Crew”

In all, it was a good weekend. The bike stayed on the rubber side, and we scored some decent finishes. We spent some great time in fellowship with Quentin and made some new friends. We have our sights set on the coming double weekend again at Summit Point in May. Until then, keep us in your prayers.

Please contact us if you would like us to do something with or for your organization. The schedule fills up quickly so get on the phone!

We have plenty of on and off track work to do for Him!

Me and another buddy went to NCCAR this past weekend with TPM. Forecast was rain all weekend, but the motorcycle gods were smiling upon us and the rain went around us. Well until the last session of the day, then it DUMPED rain while we were packing up. O well, fair trade off IMO.

I am running a Penske rear and Traxxion front w/ extenders (not sure on internals) with Power One B 120/70, 190/55 set at 26r and 33f HOT.

I ran in the supersport group (fast red and blue) on day one and was given the option of super sport or sport on day two. I chose sport group (white and red) on day two so I could slow it down and work on technique.

Items I was working on:

- loosen my grip and push elbows out to help square up corner
- square to turn
- head and shoulders down and over more, but keep spine in line
- get off bike sooner during/before braking
- stay off bike on same side turns
- move back in seat and lock in leg during cornering (thanks Roman!)
- keep vision forward

In my opinion my BP has improved a little from VIR last month. I def was quicker than at VIR, but still have a LONG ways to go. I kept up pretty well with the red/blue group guys on Saturday, but of course was passed frequently. Though I did pass some guys in the supersport group, I dont know if they were originally red or blue group. Sunday I did all the passing.

I will be going to Summit this upcoming weekend to take the MAARC school, then if all goes well race the CCS Racing Rookies Cup, HW SS, GTU, and MAYBE MW SS & SB. Not sure I want to run the meat grinder just yet.

As always, any advice or tips is welcome! :cheers

Anyways here some vids. Pics will be coming.

I have an opportunity to get ahold of an M1D sniper model with a quality mil-spec reproduction scope and an authentic M1D barrel.

Hence, I'm getting rid of my AR.

I paid reasonable prices (not crazy) for it so i'm looking to get 1000 for it.

It has:

PSA 1:7 upper

Bolt carrier is (i think) a bravo company. It has what appears to be a tungsten lining in the bolt carrier and wipes clean real nice.

New Frontier poly lower.

Magpul FDE handguard, stock, pistol grip, and MBUS. Two mags through it to sight in the MBUS.

Kidding... the title probably made you furious, sorry. The only reason I registered on this forum is because one of my friend keeps showing me picture links from this forum and it gets annoying when I'm unable to view.

My name is Jon and I used to go to school at NVCC for a couple classes. I also used to deliver chinese foods from Duk Wo in a 2005 White Mitsubishi Evolution MR with the plate "OMGBOOST" so maybe one of you have seen me around during that one summer. I also used to take trips to VA every once a month and meet up with friends. This summer I will be making the next trip to VA.

Long story short... I sold the Evo and bought a 2007 Laguna Blue Pearl Honda S2000. I go to a college in Long Island and recently winter I got stuck in the snow, even with snow tires. The S2000 is fun to drive but it's super unpractical for college. Ended up selling it and bought a nice beater car, a silver 2002 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with a 5 speed transmission. 30 MPG highway, AWD and heated leather seats.

I miss speed. I miss hearing the engine scream. So I decided to buy a bike. Due to the influence of my friends who all has a motorcycle, the two-wheel plague has reached to me and pulled me into their world. I passed a basic course at MSF and got my motorcycle license. I just bought a 2007 Honda 600RR in VA and I will be picking it up soon. They're cheaper to buy in VA than in NY for some reason. Also I am almost ATGATT qualified, just don't have the motorcycle pants.

just gonna throw this pic of me here:

We located the owner of this bowling ball cat

We have a cat in our garage, she's really nice, fat, black and white. Seems to be over 5 years old, de-clawed, happy and a bit fussy.
She was super hungry and very thirsty so we got her situated. Also took her to the vet to see if she has an owner but to no avail.
We also got her a broad spectrum flea/tick/parasite treatment just in case. She looks kinda pregnant but wouldn't comply with being prodded at by the
vet so at this point she seems to just be fat.

We found her in our neighborhood which is off of Russel Branch Parkway.
If you know anyone who is missing this cat please let me know and we'll hand her over to them.

Thanks :)

It's been ticketed and tagged for tow. It was left on the side of the road on 1600 Constitution Ave. Park Police pushed it into this little pull off, but it has been sitting here all day.

My guess is it either broke down and the owner left it hoping to tow it later, or it was stolen and abandoned.

Transporting 5 bikes to Alabama - ideas/suggestions

Okay boys and girls, most of you know that MrsCastle and I are relocating to northern Alabama later this year and we have a collection of two-wheelers that we need to get down there and I would like to get some ideas/suggestions on how to get it done. I have a Chevy 2500 HD (diesel), so pulling power isn't a problem. It's the trailer/logistics that's the problem.

Bike info - FZ1, FZ6, R6, CRF150 & Zuma 125. (Yes, I know, the Honda's the bastard of the family)

I've gone through several scenarios in my head and I just can't seem to get a good one going that seems feasible enough. Here are a couple ideas I've run through....

Scenario 1 - Borrow a friend's trailer that can haul 3 full size bikes. CRF & Zuma go in the bed of the truck and remaining 3 go in the trailer. Works perfect, only problem is it would be 1.5 trips. VA to AL to drop off bikes, back to VA to drop off friend's trailer then back to AL. 36-40 hours of drive time.

Scenario 2 - Find a one way trailer rental place that has a trailer which can accommodate 3 bikes. This is the ideal situation, but I'm not sure of a place that has a trailer big enough and/or that is setup for bikes and will allow a one way rental.

Scenario 3 - Buy a trailer.

Scenario 4 - Offer a friend some decent greenbacks who has a vehicle & trailer to help me transport.

Thinking about it, I guess scenario 1 isn't completely out of the question if I can somehow manage to transport more house goods on the return trip to AL and make it productive.

Let me hear your opinions and thoughts!

Helping my Dad sell his GTI... will add pictures tonight.

99 ½ VOLKSWAGEN – GTI GLX VR6

One owner car, made in Germany (not Mexico) – well maintained….195K miles….black/black

VR6 – 5 Speed, sunroof, leather, digital climate control, factory premium sound system 6-CD changer and much more. Have the original window sticker available to look at the factory options.

Most of the miles spent commuting and taking 500+ mile trips to the north east. Car starts, runs and drives well. Major repairs included: Dealer warranty replacement of the cylinder head assembly at 92K miles (essentially a new top end). At 120K+ miles - OEM catalytic converter , front struts, serpentine belt and tensioner, water pump, after pump, front wheel bearings, brakes pads and rotors. At 165K+ miles – rear shocks, e-brake cables, shifter lever parts, radiator fan.

Regular maintenance included frequent oil changes, brake fluid changes, trans oil changes, brake pads, spark plugs, plug wires coil packs, etc. Good Michelin tires still have plenty of miles left on them. About two years ago, a new factory windshield was installed.

The car has just passed its safety inspection; has another year on the emissions inspection; had the battery replaced and the oil and filter changed a few days ago. A/C works fine.

Included in the sale are repair manuals, original owners manual and factory sales window sticker, valet key, radio codes and two remote keys.

If you’ve been looking for a really well cared for car that you can enjoy right now, look no further.

$3500 obo (cash) - yes the KBB is lower but that does not often reflect the amout of service history this car has the buys piece of mind.

PM me with questions - I wanted to give the .NET folks a shot at this car prior to unleashing it into Craigslist land.

I am selling a set of lightly used Marvic Penta magnesium wheels. The wheels have been on 4 different bikes ranging from 04'-09' gsxr's. I bought these new in late 2005 and have had no issue mounting to any of the above mentioned bikes. These wheels have seen roughly 100 track days and show no tire change marks or scratches. The rear wheel comes with an almost new sun star 46t sprocket, and ebc rotor, the front will not come with rotors. I paid 2500 in 2005, I am asking 1400 for local pick up and cash only.
Thank You.

A while back I was searching for carb rebuild kits for my RF900, which for that bike are pretty much nonexistent. I ran into this site and emailed them and they were very nice, but unfortunately they weren't done assembling the new kit for my bike until today, well after I had already finished.

Regardless they also carry hard to find kits for a few other mikuni carburetors through their website.

picked up a 2000 RM250 smoker today, where is some place close to sterling that i can go at least test this thing a little. ran it for a quick second in the storage lot but that didn't cut it.

maybe i'm so used to my speedy having so much torque and never dying off but it seemed to have a very small powerband and died way before it should have. not the first 250 i've ridden btw. just seemed like it lost power before it should have, but pulled hard. i remember the 2000 kx250 pulling much more before having to shift...
The tracks I typically ride are Budds Creek, Tomahawk, Mountaineer (apparently it's back open), and Virginia Motorsports Park.

Lets get together and hit the race tracks this summer!

But $2300 for a new child's dirtbike seems a bit ridiculous IMO. I checked with Loudoun and they don't seem to want to budge. At all. Soooo, I'll look around and they probably lose a sale.
Anybody have a lead on them for less?

Hey folks, up for sale is a lightly used Scorpion EXO-1100 Street Demon in blue, size medium. It's a great helmet but just doesn't fit my profile. Never dropped, only a couple small scratches during its short life of commuting < 10 miles to work a few times. I bought the helmet for $300 last season, but I'll part with it for $100. You won't find this good a deal on an almost new EXO-1100. Comes with original helmet bag & manual.

I'm in Herndon and will meet a local buyer with cash. PM me if interested.

Thanks, John

I have a set of wheels that should fit pretty much all KTM 125-530 between 03-11 for sale. Silver hubs with black excel rims. They are very straight considering they were on a MX bike. Includes tires with decent life left on them, bearings are in good shape, includes wheel spacers. No rotors and no sprocket. The finish on the black rims is normal for a used black MX rim, they have rock chips and tire iron marks, but don't look horrible. 21" front, 19" rear. $600

I recently got a pair of track pants for street riding when I don't want to be all yellow and that requires that I have a jacket to hold them up so I picked up a new one and need to sell my trusty Icon. I like it because you can actually wear it out and not look like you're going to fight with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

It's got CE armor in the shoulders and elbows and I added a CE1 back protector out of a Vanson jacket I have since the one that came in it was cheapy and not certified. Also comes with a cold weather liner.

As you can see below, it's in good shape and it's a good quality jacket (MSRP-$340). There are some bug guts here and there on it and it's got a little wear on the edges of the leather that you can see below, but it's barely visible and still looks good. All the zippers are in perfect working order.

You can see the specs on Revzilla here - Icon Accelerant Stealth Leather Jacket - RevZilla
Size Medium, $140

Hey all, selling my 2008 R6. Not sure where to begin so I'll just list the stuff it has and what's been done to it and the bad stuff as well as I'll be 100% honest about it. I'll take pictures of it tomorrow as best I can even with the rainy weather and post them up ASAP. I live in Centerville and my name is Chris.

2008 R6 with 20,xxx miles, 2nd owner(Previous owner was a stand up guy and helped me with stuff even after the sale), Clear and Clean title.

The Bad
-Dropped twice, once around 5-10mph on right side, once on driveway on left side.
-Crashed in October 2011 in the grass at about 45-50mph, bike flipped due to frame slider, broke the fairing stay, tabs and such on the fairings, but still hold on fine. Bike was fixed by RnR Cycles, but had a coolant leak which doesn't leak anymore for some odd reason.
-The right front caliper bleeds a little from the bleeder screw for some odd reason, but when I clean it it is not blue so it might still be old stuff coming out. It does not leak down the caliper though, just a wet spot around the bleeder screw
-The forks leave oil residue on the lower fork tubes. I think it might be because of dirt in the fork seals from when they were just sitting on the garage floor which then collected dust and I forgot to clean the lower part before reassembling the front end which can be cleaned out with an old plastic business card or the Seal Mate tool by Motion Pro.
-Coolant is old, needs to be flushed
-Some tabs and stuff on the fairings cracked but still mount up without a problem.
-Dent in gas tank on left side from previous owner from tree branch.
-Fairngs are not in best shape i.e. cracks, scuffs, etc etc, but still mount up fine.
-Duct tape around the fairing stay to the windscreen to hold it in place, super ghetto I know.....
-Duct tape over expired state inspection sticker on swing arm.......haha

Mods
-M4 full exhaust, carbon can/stainless steel headers
-Bazzaz ZFI/AFM, Flashed ECU by OhioYJ from the R6-forums(AMAZING!, so smooth, this is one thing I will for sure miss about this bike)
- -1/+2 Driven sprockets 520 EK chain, Speedo healer
-Fren Tubo Type 4 carbon wrapped lines front and rear, CTS moto front brake rotors, carbone lorraine brake pads, recently flushed brake system with ATE Superblue DOT 4.
-Forks were refreshed back in October by Terry at Fairfax Cycles with Bikemaster fork seals and 10w Maxima Fork Oil. The forks did not have any miles on them until I started riding again back in March.
-Changed oil a couple of weeks ago with Rotella T6 and K&N oil filter, at the same time, I finally got to install the Stahlbus Oil Drain Valve that I got from Anthony@Bauce Racing(Excellent customer service!)so you will never have to unscrew the drain plug ever again. I have the OEM drain plug and the Stahlbus hose so you can drain the oil with ease! If you are not sure what this is, google is your friend
-Tech Spec tank grips
-Cox Radiator guard
-Scotts Steering Damper(Needs a refresh most likely), have the OEM steering stem nut as well.
-OEM factory battery, still running strong
-Olive wheels were replaced with OEM black wheels by previous owner
-BMC Street filter(needs to be cleaned)/smog block off plates
-Michelin Pilot Road 2's with less than 2000 miles on them.
-Free go pro mount on tail! hahaha
-Have OEM toolbag(missing the shock preload adjustment tool), 2 OEM keys, one being bent from my crash, 1 Euro key, Owner's manul, mirrors, other OEM stuff such as the horn, turn signal switch housing. Also have some smoked hotbodies flushmount turn signals
-Should mention that it doesn't have any DOT legal headlights or turn signals on it currently.

I think that is everything and will update with pictures and anything I forgot to add tomorrow. If anybody wants, I can leave the duct taped on fog light with the switch in the rear seat department to keep it "street legal" loool. The bike was recently at the Cycle Gear in Springfield on Sunday so maybe some of you guys saw it. I'm asking $4700.

Here's a video I took of the exhaust back in February 2012 shortly after I got it back from RnR Cycles.

It's about due for another valve clearance check though bike is showing no signs of valve issues. Last check all valves were in spec and I replaced a couple of shims on valves that were near minimum spec just to be on the safe side.
Bike is mostly stock. Currently shod with MT-43 Trials tires and ultra-heavy duty tubes. These are DOT rated tires. Good on the street and good off-road. Chain & sprockets in good shape. I replaced them about 3000 miles ago.
Renthal bar - I can't recall the name of the bend. A bit higher than stock.
Shorai Lithium battery (very light!)
Heavy duty skid plate
TT case savers on both case sides
Carb has been jetted with a JD jet kit and std 3x3 airbox mod.
Acrerbis hand guards.

Also included in sale is a set of Distanzias that have plenty of miles left on them.

Scratch left side of tank
Muffler dinged and scratched.
Turn signals were getting ratty and I pulled them off the bike. I have some aftermarket replacements not installed that go with the bike.
Plastics are in good shape, has some scratches, no cracks rips or tears.

$2950 OBO. Bike is ready to ride as is. For asking price I'll change all the fluids (brake fluid, radiator fluid, and oil) and I'll also check the valves so that you know you won't have to mess with anything. If you want to dicker that's cool. I'll sell it as it sits for a bit less. If you want to have someone go over the bike that's great, bring'em along to take a look. Bike is located in Northern Shenandoah County VA.

I can be reached here on the board or at 540 threethreethree 0462.

Ever wondered if your kids are getting your money’s worth at that pricey collidge? Here is proof that they are. I have the privilege of teaching some incredibly bright, hard-working students at Case Western Reserve University. These are engineering, math, nursing, pre-med, and various hard-core, thinky majors who are also game for an off-the-wall course called “Live to Ride, Ride to Live: Motorcycles in American Culture.” They read Hunter S. Thompson, Robert Pirsig, and articles from the International Journal of Motorcycle Studies. They analyze Richard Thompson lyrics. The culmination of the class is a research paper that they have to present to their fellow students. They have to select the topic of the final paper; some choose the obvious, some take risks. The paper below is one that I found particularly interesting, and I think you will, too. — Carter Edman

Hello, my name is Henry Hershey. I’m a rising sophomore at Case Western Reserve University studying biology and environment. I recently gained an interest in motorcycles thanks to a class I took called “Motorcycles in America” taught by Carter Edman. I researched this topic of motorcycles in masculine fashion trends because I wanted to learn more about why I want a motorcycle. Although I don’t currently own one, I’m working on it.

What happened to men? When did tailored suits, cigars, and log splitting disappear? Why do young men covet their technology instead of their biceps? What you’ll find if you look closely is that although long gone, the old era of manliness has not been totally forgotten. Young men still imitate idols of masculinity like Teddy Roosevelt and James Bond. They do it through metrosexual style, and through motorcycles. As metrosexuality becomes more and more prominent, hegemonic masculinity fades into a retro fashion trend that motorcycle companies like Triumph are successfully exploiting.

“Man” has been redefined time and time again by his responsibilities dictated by his culture. For millennia, men were required to be strong, unemotional, and most importantly, useful. Although different cultures valued different traits to varying degrees, their congruencies collaborated to create the archetypal man. When men of this generation look for old role models, they find hardworking breadwinners, war heroes, and upstanding citizens. The things that these men did became standards for masculine behavior. Take Theodore Roosevelt for example. He is probably the best example of the old archetype of manliness: a rough riding, adventure seeking outdoorsman who also happened to be the president of the United States. He is worshipped for his legendary manliness. Other such idols include the fictional character James Bond. Bond was a different side of manliness. Sean Connery’s Bond was a womanizing, cigarette-smoking alcoholic who could shoot you between the eyes even after a few martinis. He is venerated as a hero of manliness too. However, these guys are from a dead era: the pre-feminist era. The things that used to define archetypal manhood have been altered by progressive feminism. As soon as feminism came into the picture, hegemony was challenged. Anyone who tried to be like Sean Connery or Theodore Roosevelt was called into disrepute by feminists – women who challenged masculine hegemony by being hired for upper management jobs, getting elected for political office, and joining the military. After feminism had established itself, men no longer had to be breadwinners, war heroes or upstanding citizens. Their wives, girlfriends, and domestic partners could take care of them (Paginda 2009). Also, men perceived that what women found sexy changed from a log splitting marine to a sensitive lawyer in a slim-fit suit that wouldn’t complain about changing a diaper. And so, men changed, willingly or not, to fit the new niche.

What remain of the archetypal man are his material belongings. Although there might seem to be a Rough Rider revival, in reality, only the superficial qualities of hegemonic masculinity remain. The superficial attempt to latch on to pre-feminist masculinity comes out mainly through style and fashion. The modern metrosexual male is the prime example.

“Metrosexual man wears Davidoff ‘Cool Water’ aftershave (the one with the naked bodybuilder on the beach), Paul Smith jackets (Ryan Giggs wears them), corduroy shirts (Elvis wore them), chinos (Steve McQueen wore them), motorcycle boots (Marlon Brando wore them), Calvin Klein underwear (Marky Mark wears nothing else). Metrosexual man is a commodity fetishist: a collector of fantasies about the male sold to him by advertising.” — Simpson

Although not every man wears these things, what Mark Simpson is really saying is that men have become vain imitators of their really masculine ancestors, like Steve McQueen and Marlon Brando. They are constantly told that the easiest way to imitate their alpha male ancestors is by mimicking their style. The advertising world is telling young men that the best way to be sexy is to invest in the fashion of the retro-manly era. Although they can’t be the chain-smoking, wife beating, alcoholics that many glorified men of that era were, they can certainly look like them and get sexual attention for it.

Another way that men have tried to assert their challenged masculinity is through “menglish”. By adding the word “man” or its many variations to a word traditionally ascribed to the female gender, or by being a portmanteau of words, the new word becomes accessible to men (Paginda 2009). Examples include: man bag (a purse for men), bromance (a friendship between men), man date (an outing for two men), etc. A dictionary of these terms exists online. It began in 1999 when surf journalist Chris Cote began a column called “Significant Surf Slang” in Transworld SURF Magazine. The fact that these terms even exist makes it clear that masculinity has been challenged and men are slowly adopting more and more traditionally feminine tendencies.

What says it all about modern masculinity is a blog called The Art of Manliness. The blog features 6 sections: “A Man’s Life”, “Dress & Grooming”, “Health & Sports”, “Manly Skills”, “Money & Career” and “Relationships & Family”. “A Man’s Life” features essays on philosophical questions about what it means to be a man, tutorial style pieces on typical manly qualities and best of all, a series called “Manvotionals” which features pieces on manly virtue. One such piece is entitled “Manvotional: Theodore Roosevelt on Integrity in Private and Public Life”. Again, we see the veneration for Theodore Roosevelt as an icon and role model for aspiring “manly men”.

It is an obsession with the vintage and retro manliness that stimulates the readers of this site. The “Dress and Grooming” page heavily features vintage photos of men like Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood: idols from the pre-feminist era. It is obvious that guys are still trying to mimic these men, but not so much through attitude as through style, because let’s face it: it is a lot easier to buy a vintage leather jacket than to have integrity and strong morals.

Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, James Bond and Theodore Roosevelt all have something in else in common: they all ride. Although Teddy rode a horse, the others rode iron ones. The motorcycle is an icon – a trophy – of the Rooseveltian archetype of manliness that helps men assert their masculinity. Sometimes it is even seen as a warhorse on which men can ride into battle against domesticity – female hegemony. James May, a co-host of Top Gear, a hugely popular motoring television show in the UK and the US, sold his motorcycle to pay for a new kitchen, and he loathes himself for it. May insists that the loss of his motorcycle was his emasculation. Losing one’s motorcycle is like being castrated, according to May. His message is “Men of all ages: put down this paper, rise up and buy a motorcycle. Domesticity is for fools” (May 2004). He believes that buying a bike will make you a man.

On The Art of Manliness website, motorcycle expert Chris Hunter says that “motorcycles are one of the pinnacles of manliness”. In this article, he details a suggested strategy for first time motorcycle buyers. He cites Steve McQueen as “a guy we look up to” with a collection of over 100 machines (Hunter 2009). Steve McQueen is all over this website, whether his picture is assuring young men that turtle necks are still cool, or that ripping across some dunes on a Husqvarna is still “man-tastic”.

People still believe that motorcycles are manly, even if fewer and fewer men are riding them. Men who still subscribe to the old archetypes of manliness are often drawn to motorcycles. In a video produced by a company called Wilderness Collective, young men who style themselves after their heroes from the glory days of manhood go on a motorcycle camping trip through Yosemite National Park. They are depicted as bearded, gritty, dirty dudes, smoking cigars (not cigarettes because everyone knows those will kill you) on the mountain. However, these guys are given the same gear to wear and they all use their tech-gadgets to navigate and blog and take pictures. Also, they drink gin and tonics (a gentleman’s drink, but not the stuff of lumberjacks). The men in this video are models of the middle of the transition of the biker image.

Bikers have changed from Hell’s Angels and their wannabes to weekend hobbyists and commuters. Recently, the oxford English dictionary changed its definition of the word “biker” from “A motorcyclist, especially one who is a member of a gang: a long-haired biker in dirty denims” to “A motorcyclist, especially one who is a member of a gang or group: a biker was involved in a collision with a car”. They dropped the long-haired dirty denim part because of complaints made by motorcyclists and a poll of 524 bikers that demonstrated a significant change in the “biker”. Now, 65% spend their rides alone as opposed to in a gang, fewer than 10% have long hair, and 42% are free of tattoos, piercings, facial hair, and gang markings (Oxford English Dictionary Drops Dirty Biker Definition 2013). The image of the biker is changing dramatically from the leather-clad troublemakers from the ‘60s to clean-cut middle class hobbyists.

Some fear that computer technology will take the place of motorcycles as the carnal craving satisfier, but the computer geek needs to be abandoned as a potential customer. A New York Times opinion piece from 2011 claimed that the iPhone and iPad are replacing motorcycles. They fulfill the new generation’s need for fast, sleek technology but in a different way. Their need for speed is not satisfied by the wind in their hair, but by RAM and Internet speed. But this isn’t the case for all young men (Seidel 2011). A different group, the new metrosexual men, have a craving too: a craving for retro, vintage, manly stuff.
Triumph capitalizes on the icons provided by popular culture, specifically Hollywood. Steve McQueen, one of the most glorified motorcyclists, actors, and men of all time, is one of the figureheads of Triumph Motorcycles. Steve McQueen has been venerated by motorcyclists as one of the most skilled racers ever. An article published in Cycle World Magazine in 1964 profiles McQueen’s custom Triumph Bonneville (The Selvedge Yard 2012). The Bonneville has since become an icon in and of itself. Because of Steve McQueen’s brand preference, Triumph profited tremendously.

Another famous Triumph rider is Marlon Brando. Brando, like McQueen, is also a symbol of old-school masculinity. His character in the movie “The Wild One” is arguably the reason that anyone thinks that motorcycles are a symbol of hegemonic masculinity. Johnny is a rambling drifter with a stick-it-to-the-man attitude that emanates from his leather jacket, his intimidating snarls, and most of all his Triumph Thunderbird.

Brando and McQueen, although the most popular Triumph models, are not the only ones that have helped the Triumph brand. Clint Eastwood, another hero of manliness, rode a Bonneville, as well as Bob Dylan, a folk-hero and God to many young metrosexual men of our era. Evel Knievel flew his Bonneville over the fountains at Caesar’s Palace. All of these guys cultivated an image for Triumph that the Telegraph describes eloquently: “In the Fifties and Sixties the Triumph motorcycle was the ultimate symbol of cool, outshining even Harley-Davidson as the postwar epitome of style, freedom and rebellion” (Oliver 2009). Triumph’s brand identity snowballed into a hugely successful standard, but nearly met its demise in the late 1970s.

Although the company almost failed due to “recessions, a disastrous fire and the worst industrial practices of Seventies Britain”, they were able to get back on their feet thanks to key marketing strategies that included a rebirth of the image that they so easily cultivated in the 1960s. With the investment of millionaire John Bloor, the company was totally revamped and production of bikes quickly took off. The new line of bikes could compete with precise Japanese engineering while remaining true to the Triumph brand. They came out with three bikes, The Thruxton, The Scrambler, and The Bonneville. “The Thruxton is pure Sixties cafe racer; the Scrambler, with its full-length chrome pipes, looks just like the bikes McQueen rode through the dunes; and the reborn Bonneville looks just like it did in the Seventies, but with some very modern engineering” (Oliver 2009). The designs were completely retro-focused. Triumph knew that they could be successful with a retro design because vintage is all the rage. The new wave of metrosexual men who are all about finding the coolest, vintage, manly looking stuff could find exactly what they were looking for in Triumph’s motorcycles.

A huge boost for Triumph was the adoption of a new figurehead: Tom Cruise. In 2000, Cruise chose to ride Triumph for a motorcycle duel scene in his movie Mission Impossible: 2. The year after, Triumph turned its first profit, producing 31,000 machines (Oliver 2009). By adding Cruise to the roster, Triumph had another in with the metrosexual crowd. Cruise is a clean cut, tailored suit, kind of guy– a metrosexual. By putting one of them on the same list as the gods (McQueen, Brando, Eastwood and Dylan), Triumph was able to compel them even more.

Another key strategy that Triumph has had great success with is the special edition motorcycle. Although not unique to Triumph, the company puts out limited edition anniversary bikes every 5 years for models like the Triple, Bonneville, Tiger, Thunderbird, etc. In 2012, two special edition bikes were released, The Steve McQueen edition Bonneville (complete with green khaki paint) and the 110th anniversary Bonneville (celebrating 110 years of Triumph). These bikes are very close replicas with modern engineering twists. An article in Cycle World from 2012 says “Words can’t fully describe the Matte Khaki Green paint and period-cool aura that surround this bike like a blatant attempt to cash in on a piece of authentic British Americana.” Obviously, Triumph knows exactly how to cater to the obsession with its classic models.

Triumph is also very fashion conscious. In Mark Simpson’s quote, he mentions Paul Smith, a British fashion designer. It just so happens that Paul Smith designed a whole line of clothing based on the Triumph Bonneville T100. In fact, he had so much success with this partnership that Triumph commissioned Smith to design a line of vintage looking Bonnies, which were sold as collector’s items (Paul Smith & Triumph 2007). This kind of business is exactly the kind of business that makes Triumph so successful in their niche. They know exactly why their bikes are desired and by whom. They consistently hit the bull’s eye when targeting the “commodity fetishist” metrosexual men of our era.

Triumph’s consciousness of their brand image was made completely clear in an advertisement that they placed in a special edition of Newsweek magazine. The issue was dedicated to Mad Men, a TV show about a 1950s advertising firm and the lifestyles associated with upper middle class white America at the time. The styles in Mad Men are considered vintage and retro, and the male characters are models of the style that many metrosexuals try to emulate. The ad that Triumph placed featured a Bonneville with the slogan “The bike every bad boy should own” and a large black and white portrait of Steve McQueen in a Triumph tee shirt wiping his dirty, sweaty face with a rag. The ad won a reader decided contest among several other large firms (Backus 2012). This further supports that Triumph is the image of retro, vintage, manly, and cool.

Other companies have not been so successful in this venture – namely, Harley Davidson. In 2011, the Marlon Brando Estate sued Harley for using the Brando name on a model of riding boot without permission. The Estate sought financial damages for all the profits made from the Brando Boots and settled (Barrett 2011). This supports that through securing the permissions for use of the brand endorsers’ names and images, Triumph has been most able to successfully exploit their status as figureheads of masculinity and male fashion.

Norman Reedus aboard his Hammarhead Jack Pine.

Triumph has grown into a hugely successful company, producing more bikes than they ever have before, and it is all thanks to the image that they have cultivated for 110 years. With the help of Hollywood icons and millionaire investors, their motorcycles have become the commodity that every man needs, and every metrosexual wants. In order to hang on to or imitate the superficial qualities that remain of the idols of hegemonic masculinity, the new generation looks for the pinnacle of manliness: the motorcycle. Many companies could learn from Triumph’s strategy, and benefit in a similar way. But, they need to recognize that men have changed, and that there is a huge market of them that crave the masculinity of motorcycles. My advice to motorcycle companies is this: make your motorcycles trendy as hell.

You are chosen to compete against 9 other people, a battle to the death. All ten of you are locked in your neighborhood Home Depot. The place is closed and lit by flood lights above exits and other misc. lights that make action movies look sweet. The goal is to kill one another to become last man standing.

You are allowed to choose 3 pieces of equipment to aid you. Anything with a bar-code counts as one piece of equipment. For example, if you choose a nail gun, then a container of nails will be needed, so that would equal two pieces of equipment. You can only use the weapons you choose originally. No area of the home depot is off limits. The outside gardening area is in play, the only sealed doors are the exterior ones.

What three items would you choose and what would be your strategy?
