I love shopping online for closeouts if it's something that will work for you.
That said... local dealers can be a great resource. I ordered up my helmet, chest protector, & boots at a local MC dealer for a good bit less than I could buy them online (checked three of the big online outlets). One item didn't fit and they got me a new one, no return shipping costs or hassles, I like things easy.
It never hurts to ask a MC dealer "I'm interested in these items and would like to spend my money here rather than on the internet, what can you do on the price?"
If you have a history of spending money with a good MC dealer they will almost always work with you on large purchases and make it worth you while. It's a win-win from where I sit. I like to be able to pick things up and handle them before I buy. I like to be able to walk in and walk out with stuff the same day. I can't do that on line and for that convenance I don't mind spending my money locally one bit.
Pick a decent dealer, develop a relationship, enjoy the benifits of being able to try before you buy.
As cool as acceleration is...not slowing down is where the fun truly begins.

That might be some of the best advice given so far.
Chest protector is a medium, but adjustable to a large.
The one pic with my finger is pointing out the holes for adjustment.

If you wanna know what's hot in MX gear, go to a bookstore and peruse a copy of Motocross Action and Dirt Rider magazine. They have lots of pics, reviews and ads that will help you choose. It's an old-school solution, I know. Who reads magazines anymore?
I used to rock a Shoei helmet, Scott goggles with tearoffs, white Alpinestars boots and mostly Fox jerseys and pants back in the day. Knee guards (with straps above and below the knee) and a soft under-jersey chest protector with elbow and forearm protection are essential (although kinda hot). SixSixOne makes good knee and chest protection. I took a pair of scissors to my Pressure Suit and cut off the sleeve cuffs, removed the back protector and trimmed a few other parts to make it a little cooler and fit me a little better.
I'd recommend against a hard chest protector, unless it's backed with thick foam. Foam provides impact protection. The thicker, the better. A hard protector only deflects roost and doesn't help one bit in a crash.
