Seeing that you are both victims here, have you reached out to the original owner? Maybe talking to them will help close some loops. And I agree, it sucks that you spent time and money fixing a bike up just to hand it over to someone else.

THe police have told me not to reach out to the original owner. I'm going pursue compensation from the guy who sold it to me. My guess is just as good as anyone else as far as what may have happened how the seller of the bike may have obtained the bike. As the bike goes, the original owner has gotten the bike back (just in time for riding weather), but if he is involved he will not enjoy it for much longer.
