Best Route from Clinton (or SE DC) to Dulles - June 18, 2007, 04:31 PM

Hey, I live off of Rt. 5 in Maryland and work @ Dulles airport. With my car i usually go thru the city to catch 395 -> 110 washington blvd. -> 66 -> 267. It's cool in a car, but now that I want to ride my bike to work I'm trying to find the smoothest and safest way to Dulles. Not sure if that is the best way or just to take the beltway around over the W. Wilson bridge.

Anyone have any routes?

From 395, I'd take GW PKWY to VA 123...then pick up 267 there in McLean.

What time do you leave?
GW Pkwy to 495 to toll road works, too (take 110 to get to GW Pkwy)... however, the toll road is the fastest way to get there during traffic.....

GW Pkwy is not an HOV restricted road. It's pretty scenic so enjoy.

I'd probably do 95-S to 110 (memorial bridge), follow that to 66 west, and roll 66 west to the Dulles Access road.

GW is dicey my friend, one day it's clear, the next day its fubar. But like Tanya said, it's actually quite beautiful. You absolutely MUST try it in the mornings because looking out over the Potomac is lovely at 7am.

Well I work in Reston, and if you live off of 5, I would get on Penn Ave to 395. After that, get on Rt.110 to GW PKwy(if it's not backup). But really, there is no shorter way to get to Dulles in the morning. Words of advice, get on 66 before 730, or you will be sitting for about 20 minutes for nothing.

exactly my problem now (in my car): i take 66, and end up of 20 min. of creeping traffic... and i still can't figure out why there is traffic there. no accidents, the merge lanes arent difficult. its like people choose to go extra slow between exits 69-71 LOL i never even thought of taking GW. looking on the map it seemed like it went far north, just to come back south to hit 267/Dulles Toll Road. but if there's less traffic, i guess it is worth it.

and i look forward to the scenery!

thanks

looking at a map: so whats the best way after taking GW to get to 267? do i take it all the way to the beltway and drive south to 267? or is there another road before that i get off of?
