Route around Crofton / Bowie, MD? - November 28, 2006, 01:09 PM

Any recommendations on a route around Crofton/Bowie MD?

I am right by 450/301 and have heard some good things about Davidsonville. Would appreciate any prefereed routes and road condition analysis.

Thanks!

Wassup Mike!!
Yes, it sure has been a long time - last year and a half have been crazy due to work. Hope to be back on a regular riding/posting pattern soon. Hope you are keeping well!

I think everyone in the central area of MD should try hitting up 7 hills, one o fmy personal favorites, it is near Ellicott City...
Also, there is a never ending set of backroads south of you, towards annapolis... I always get a little lost trying to find them but once I do, it's hours upon hours of some pretty nice paved roads through the fields and hills.

This route is a rework of a route I did a couple of months ago 2up. This route will take you through Davidsonville, around to Galesville and Deale and down through North Beach. From there you'll continue down through Parran, Barstow and cross over to Patuxent. The route then loops north up to just south of Upper Marlboro. A short highway ride around Upper Marlboro and it returns to backroads that lead back into Davidsonville.

Mostly <55mph scenic backroads, moderately twistie with some straight stretches. The roads are well kept and in good overall condition. They are backroads, however, so there's always the possibility of gravel, leaves, sand, wildlife, etc.

Total distance will probably be somewhere around 100 miles, give or take. Nice views of forrests, shorelines overlooking the Chesapeake, marsh areas, etc.

-424 south to Davidsonville and 214.
-Left on 214 East to 468.
-Right on 468 to 256.
-Right on 256 to 2.
-Left on 2 to 261.
-Left on 261 (Friendship Rd) to North Beach.

-261 thru N Beach until 263.
-Left on 263 to Wilson Rd.
-Right on Wilson Rd to 402.
-Right on 402 (Dares Beach Rd) to 2/4.
-Left on 2/4 to 231.
-Right on 231.

-Continue on 231, even crossing past hwy 5.
-Right on Shop Rd.
-Cross straight over hwy 5 again, road turns to Bryantown Rd.
-Byantown to Mudd Rd.
-Left on Mudd Rd.
-Right on Poplar Hill Rd.
-Poplar Hill becomes Croom Rd (382).

-382 to 301.
-Right on 301 to Upper Marlboro and hwy 4.
-East on hwy 4 to 408.
-408 runs into 2.
-Continue on 2 around Harwood to Birdsville Rd.
-Left on Birdsville Rd to 424 in Davidsonville.
-Arrive back at Davidsonville.

Yes 7 hills is not for the faint of heart with its sharp quick turning dips, the road next to it before u go up to it is pretty nice as well. those hills bottom out cars easily. I went with my bike and took a real conservative pass.

Yeah taking the backroads to get to Annapolis is pretty sweet, I use Veterans Highway and then take Crownsville road and work from there.

Saint Michaels Church Road or something in Crofton is a nice road, lots of twist and stuff, from there you can go a few ways to hit some turns and such.
