Smooth Operator - May 22, 2006, 09:22 AM

http://www.smoothoperatorprogram.com/

The Smooth Operator Program is a public safety initiative, which aims to provide education, information and solutions for the problem of aggressive driving. For nearly ten years, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., have partnered through the Smooth Operator Program to combat aggressive driving.

Eighteen law enforcement agencies in the Washington area launched Smooth Operator in 1997, conducting four separate week-long enforcement waves in an effort to understand and combat aggressive driving. Although the law enforcement effort was successful, and resulted in 62,000 citations, officials felt more was needed to raise awareness and change behavior.

A coalition of elected officials, government agencies, private sector organizations and law enforcement agencies from all three jurisdictions in the Washington metropolitan area met to develop a comprehensive program to reduce aggressive driving. They wanted to learn more about the seriousness of the aggressive driving problem and felt that the motorists needed to be educated about the dangers involved with aggressive driving

Bsically if you get caught on any of these days listed above... expect the max sentence.

wow great - bullshit. how about the dangers of old people on the road. or stupid asses that stay at 50 mph in the left lane of 66. or generally dumbass drivers that shouldn't be on the road to begin with but manage to evade law enforcement because technically they aren't doing anything illegal.

Define success... 62,000 citations merely burdoned the populace financially. Has there been a lowering of accidents? Are people more aware and concerned about possibly hurting someone by being reckless or about getting caught doing it? What is our objective, making the people afraid or making them more aware and responsible? If you want a fearful populace then yup... it's a success.

Define illegal... I was struck with a funny thought this morning riding in on I-66... everyone was going 76+ MPH... everyone was driving "recklessly", but tell that to a judge...

Great work, stab at the symptom and never the problem.

Watch your ass, the sharks are hunting.

I heard a couple of Leesburg cops talking about their "Smooth Operator" checklist of offenses. Kind of like a game I guess.
