Who's sharing the road with you? - May 22, 2006, 07:00 PM

Loudoun County, Virginia- Sheriff’s Deputies issued 49 citations this week during a driver’s license checkpoint in Eastern Loudoun.

The checkpoint was conducted on Augusta Drive in the area of Duck Spring Drive in Sterling after deputies who patrol that area came across a number of unlicensed drivers during routine traffic stops.

The Sheriff’s Community Relations Section, in cooperation with Traffic Section of the Sheriff's Office, ran the checkpoint from 4:20 PM to 7 PM on Wednesday.

Fourteen citations were issued for drivers who did not have a driver's license or a valid driver's license, two citations were issued for drivers operating a motor vehicle while their license is suspended, and two citations were issued for drivers in violation of their driving restrictions. There were also two arrests for DUI, one of which was a felony charge.

During the checkpoint 1104 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and were screened by a deputy. Fifty-three vehicles were pulled off from the roadway for further investigation.

Which brings the question up...

If YOUR license was suspended, restricted... would you still drive?

...I would.

So 1 out of every 23 drivers (in that area) is driving illegally. Since motorcycles aren't mentioned, I would assume most (if not all) of there were cagers. So it's not just motorcyclists who drive without licenses!

Now adays your license can get taken for many reasons unrelated to driving.
Child support, don't pay, lose your license? Makes a lot of sense to me to take away a fundamental way someone gets to work and this is going to make them pay??? Yea whatever.
If my license was taken for this reason I sure would drive without it...

I am against checkpoints. I feel they dance along the edges of privacy and support unmerited interrogation.

Is the jump to being pulled off the street while walking to be questioned as to your whereabouts that far out of reason? I don't think it's far enough.

This is the second time in a year (I think) that they have set up a checkpoint at that intersection. The other time I know of it was summer. I was wearing a scarf over my head to tame the hair in my roadster. The cop pointed at me to pull over and I did. He walked up to my car and asked for my license and registration. Before I reached for it, I took off the scarf and he immediately apologized and said I could move on. I don't mean to have a chip on my shoulder, but was that racial profiling? It seemed evident to him that I was caucasian, but I could have been Lebanese (or from any number of countries in the Arab region), since you'll see a bunch of fair skin, hair, and eyes there, too. I smiled at him, thanked him, put the scarf back on, and got on my merry little way.

This is unrelated to checkpoints but in the same arena as racial profiling I guess.
Anyway, I was at the gun store one day this side of DC. I was there when a black man came in to buy ammo. They took his license information before they sold it to him.
After he left I asked them why? They said it was the law. I asked how come they have never taken mine? They said it was to their discretion who they took it from and who they didn't??? Hmmm!!!
