can I mount a battery sideways? - May 3, 2011, 07:14 AM

I bought a new battery for my bike the other day. When I got the new battery home, I put the new one in place, it started up just fine, but I couldn't fit the seat on top of the battery. It was too tall. It fits if I turn it sideways. It may have been in that way in the first place: I didn't really look when I took it out. The terminals are still facing upwards, as they are mounted on one edge of the battery.

Will this cause any trouble, or am I going to have to move heaven and earth to find a weird battery that fits my bike, or modify the underside of my seat?

what kind of battery is it? brand and model please. Some sorts of batteries will not care how you put them, others will leak acid.

Yep, it's a sealed battery, so you can go ahead.

Great. It fits like a glove this way. Are there any precautions that I need to take? Wrap the edges in electrical tape, or anything?

/thanks for the help.

Yeah. Any position except inverted will be fine for this MF battery.

LOLING AT Leoallafila's avatar in the photo of the battery in the background.

As the you said OP....the battery was probably turned on it's side already...being tha it fits like a glove when you replace it on it's side.

What do you value more? Life or Image?

no need for any tape, any insulation, just flip it on its side, and ride!!! just make sure you put any retaining clips, straps, or sleeves back on or over the battery.

I will, but with the amount of space under that seat, I can't imagine it moving anywhere.

right, I'm just referring to the straps that the manufacturer puts over the battery, some do, some don't, I'm just reminding you to not forget
