Can someone explain the benefit and intricacies of a sprocket conversion? I know a little, but not enough. Also, what's involved in a gearing mod/ upgrade? What do I get from this?

I assume you are talking about a 520 conversion kit for your chain and sprockets. Most bikes come with a 530 or 525 chain. The 520 kit is lighter and reduces the unsprung weight of the bike thus allowing it to spin up quicker. The conversion usually isn't recommended for 900cc bikes and above but it is commonly done. While you are performing this mod a lot of people will also go down a gear on the front sprocket or go up a couple on the rear sprocket. This will give you quicker acceration but will also lower your top speed. Another note is that the 520 kits will usually not last as long as the stock chains and sprockets.
