I have a 1994 ZFR 600... after finding the short that kept blowing the main fuse... putting some gas dry in the tank and filling it up with 93... replacing the battery on it...

It will fire up... it wont idle at all, even with the choke all the way out... and you cant rev it past 6k at all... you hear the motor peak out and then a back fire... any clues?

Spark plugs every 10k on mine. When you change em blow out each whole seperatly then pull the plug only after doing this. Sand dirt and gravel like to hide in those deep holes.

Also look for any cracks or leaks around any vaccum lines, or on the rubber stacks that hold the carbs to the motor.

Do what Drag said before changing plugs, if you dont have a compressor (not many of us do) get a can of compressed air from cvs, grocery store, computer store etc.

Extra cans can be turned upside down and used to freeze the skin of unsuspecting friends (caution, more than a micro burst will cause serious skin damage)

i looked at the stacks yesterday, they looked fine. the plug wires look brand new, but i will replace the plugs tomorrow and get some canned air before hand.

after that... if she is still misbehaving... is it safe to assume i need to adjust my carbs? or assume the worse and seafoam them?

Your carbs are probably full of crap blocking all the small holes, especially the pilot jets which is why it won't idle..

SV... are you saying i need to seafoam? i honestly hate seafoam... i've never had much luck with it when i would do it to cars... usually requires a valve adjustment after ... and a head gasket lol

As a helper.

This bike was running swimmingly not 6 weeks ago, it sat in a shady shop while they "looked for a short" that kaan here found in 5 minutes. My thoughts are that the carbs are out of adustment, when you feed her gas she revs fine just peaks early. Fiddle with the carb adjustment first and then tear em off and rebuild. I think this is a bogging issue.

Gas isn't nearly as stable as it used to be. If the gas was on the verge of instability, 6 weeks can knock it out of the park. We've seen instability issues within 30-60 days of current fuels. If it wasn't experiencing carb issues before it went in there, there would be nothing to change those settings except fuel issues.

On a side note, if it's been jetted or you're utilizing K&N separate filters, the bike becomes sensitive to not only altitude, but barometric pressure.

* cleaning carbs SUCKS

i agree sounds like jets are dirty etc. i had a zx7 yrs ago that clogged jets showed the same symptoms and i took em out and soaked em in cleaner for a day and all was good.... also had a pinched fuel line under the tank one time not let the bike rev high either so check that as well...

to my knowledge it hasnt been jetted... and i know there is not a K&N system on it. I guess i'll study my book some more and figure out how i'm going to clean these carbs. one of the guys at work said something about using 44k... whatever that is... i'm buying fuel injected from now on.

Funky carbs are easier and cheaper than funky injectors.

The bike came apart Jay, this ratty little bike shop off seminary road fucked around with it for 6 weeks, I am fairly certain that if it's not the gas it may be that they fuddled with the carbs.

Check the underside of those carbs kaan. Should be a way to adjust them up.

All carbs have primary and secondary jets and if i remember correctly it was my secondary jets that clogged, and 44k is a fuel system cleaner that is made by BG products and is great stuff albeit 20-30 a can depending where u get it. car dealers and bike dealers usually carry it.
good luck

how long do i have to run the bike with 44k in it? I need to find a place locally that sells it... i'll have to call around i guess.

better 20-30 a can than sending it to have the carbs worked on and new plugs, etc.
