Gas tank/reserve tank question - May 29, 2007, 03:25 PM

On my way to lunch today, my bike was riding a bit rough, which it sometimes does before warming up, but then went all cushy and stalled. Couldn't get it to restart. This happened to me once before when I ran out of gas, so I looked at the reserve switch. I can't swear to it, but it looked like it was on the reserve tank. I put it onto the regular tank and she started up and I got my lunch.

My question is, if it was on reserve, wouldn't it have access to the fuel in the main tank as well? It's an 04 kawi 500r if that helps.

the arrow on the lever points away from the long part. I was going to show you a picture but after googling "pet cock" at work I may no longer be employed.

There usually aren't two seprate tanks. Your pet cock has two tubes from it to the tank. One is longer then the other. When you select reserve you are selecting the shorter tube. Regardless they both pull from the same tank just a different levels. Not sure why this was designed. I suspect for people who run the tank dry believing that "E" means "Enough". Could be you have something that is clouging up your reserver tube which caused it to run rough this morning since no gas was passing through.

probably not the case, but if you've had your tank off recently, it's possible that you connected the two fuel lines to the wrong locations...with the petcock pointing to "on", it would actually be on reserve, and with it pointing to "reserve", it would be pulling from the "on" tube. wouldn't be the first time it's happened to anyone.

Not sure if the cap is vented or not. At any rate it hasn't done anything since.
