how do I tell which of my cylinders is firing? - July 31, 2006, 02:59 PM

I think I'm only firing on one of my cylinders. Is there a way to determine if it is firing without removing the plug? Is there a way of testing the plug wire to see if it is getting fire?

Start the bike, let it run, cut it off.

Now here comes the tricky part....

wait for it...

wait for it....

Lick your finger and stick it to each header. If it sizzles, it's firing.

That will be $200 please.

can't just use a turkey baster or something and shoot a little water in there instead of sticking your finger?

If you dont have easy access try a spray bottle or squirt gun. Start it let it warm up a bit then spray each pipe one at a time. If you have a twin the rear pipe will be a little warmer than the front.

It can also burn you. The absolut best way is with an IR thermometer. Then the spray bottles. If its not steaming it aint fireing. The finger can and will burn you long before you can get to engine normal and stabil temps.

It works well if you have a dead cylinder but an intermitant (SP) is much harder to find that way.

You can also take a grease pencil and mark each header pipe.

Start the bike up, then watch to see which grease mark doesn't melt off. That cylinder isn't firing.
