Kawasaki Will Start But Not Idle - May 21, 2012, 08:31 AM

Please help a brother out before I sell this bike!

2007 ZX6R 7,500 miles

Issue: Bike will start but not idle. When I try to turn the throttle it shuts off.

I've been riding my bike fine for a few weeks. It was sitting outside all last week (remember when it was raining) under a cover. I went to ride it Friday and it would not stay on. I can start it and it idles really low. Then when I hit the throttle it immediately cuts off.

Prior to this incident, I put in a full tank of PREMIUM gas.

So I've been online this weekend trying to find a resolution. I can't find THE answer. I've drained the tank, put in new fuel with Seafoam. No luck. Air filter is fine. Checked fuel lines and they seem to be fine. Battery is 12 great volts!

Anyone have any recommendations?

Have you tried messing with the idle control knob, I m not very familiar with ZX-6 but on most bikes its usually located somewhere near your left knee, above the shift linkage.

I'd be looking at fuel delivery first. Fuel filter, pump, etc. TPS? Not so sure about that, but it might be worth researching if this is one of the symptoms.

If you think you may have had water in there, then you could still have some in your system. You can drain and refill the tank again to further dilute the water. Also you may have to let it idle a while and get the contaminated gas through the system.

I would suspect bad gas wouldn't give you a great idle though, so not so sure I would spend time on that possibility.

Yea tried that. The knob isn't providing anymore idle.

People on other forums mention that water maybe in the tank, but after draining it and using seafoam, I just can't see that being the issue. I'm going to check the pump. Its wierd, the last day I rode the bike I filled up and rode from centreville to leesburg and back. When I went to drain the gas it was like I didn't use any gas. It was still topped off.

Sounds like it's not getting enough fuel. Hard to tell from a distance but that is my guess unless you have a fault code light ("engine light") on.

I would take the tank off and start looking at rubber hoses and lines. Cracked or missing vacuum lines with cause idle issues for sure. How does it run depsite the idle? Have you tried the ol Italian tune up?

Have you checked the voltage from the stator/rectifier (should be ok if your battery is staying charged) and the coils/plugs/connections to make sure they are clean, undamaged and tight? I had build up on a plug once that just needed a brushing and it was fine. I assume you pluged in the fuel pump power feed between draining and refilling the tank. These things are almost always an issue of fuel or spark.

Install new spark plugs and you'll be fine. You have one or two that have fuel fouled so when it starts the RPMs are low because the fouled plugs are not firing and when you hit the throttle the fuel deliver is increased and you are still without 1-2 cylinders so it dies. Well that's my EDUCATED guess anyways.

+1, just from my LIMITED experience, it sounds like this. Sounds like a similar issue ive seen in a car, replaced the spark plugs and worked fine.

I think the book says every 7500 miles, but that is a little crazy. I changed mine at 15K when I did my valve check and they looked fine. How often you clean your filter is a major factor too.
