looking for someone more mechanically inclined then i am. - May 15, 2010, 06:45 PM

Here is the story of my bike:

2004 cb600f with 5kl miles that i bought for what i thought was a "good deal" bike had been sitting, but i rode it home with only noticing it have some lag at low rpm's. Well fast forward 3 weeks i came back from school and the bike no longer ran, charged the battery, changed the gas to 93, and the plugs. That didn't do anything the bike will try to start and even on full choke will just knock and not start. I am thinking maybe the old fuel after i rode it sat and gunked something up. I am looking for anyone on here that might want to make a few hundred bucks fixing it for me but i really don' t even know if it is just the carbs or not anymore as i can't get it to start.

If i can't find anyone on here i will have to take it to brooks and hopefully they will treat me well ( i hear they have a mil discount) but they quoted me at around $350 if its just the carbs and im not quite sure thats all thats wrong with it. Being a reservist/student i really am not making that much, so please let me know if you can help me figure out whats wrong with my bike.

I have no idea about carbs but 99% of the time educated people will suggest to clean the carbs

My noob suggestion would be use the starting fluid and try to get it started .. if it does let it run and go for a looong ride till things clean up automatically .. gl!

I have to agree with hating carbs, my last bike was an 01 f4i and even though it was beat to shit it still ran and gave me no troubles, this bike has sealed the deal on me never buying a bike with carbs ever again, i don't know what in gods name compelled me to buy this damn PITA bike

and boomboom you got a PM

You said it "knocks", do you mean the starter doesn't rotate the motor and you just hear the starter clicking? Before you start doing price estimates, you are going to want to make sure the motor still rotates. You could have had a bad ring or seal seize up at worst and require a rebuild, or as simple as the fuel pump not priming. Let me know if it rotates when you try to start it.

What do you need done? Do you need someone to work with you at your place or do you want to pay someone to pick the bike up and the fix it? A carb job will cost over 400 bucks just by itself at the shop.

Basically looking for somone that wants to make some cash helping me clean my carbs, and could come over to my place to help me get the bike running. I really can't afford to drop it off at a shop
