My r1 is making a strange sound coming from the engine. It is seems like it comes from the lower right section. Its a ticking sound and it is getting much louder. The shifting has also gotten harder, when i bought it, it was very scmooth. Now its very hard to shift. I recently changed oil and filter.

Because I'm pretty sure you're legit, I'll throw out some possiblities.

It could be many things as well as nothing wrong at all. Also sometimes what you're hearing may actually be a problem on the other side of the engine.
It could be valves clattering, a cam chain that needs adjustment (automatic tensioners go bad) or clutch plates rattling. Getting away from ticking to more of a knocking would be a spun crank bearing. Unless you've completely abused the engine, run it with low or no oil, or have an oil passage blockage that is not likely. The only way I could be certain is to hear it myself.

How many miles on your R1? How is the oil level?
When is the last time you changed the oil prior to this most recent change? Months and miles ago. What type of oil are you using?
How many miles since the valves were last inspected/adjusted?

That "ticking" noise is the valves. Very common occurance with all R1's over time. Check www.R1-forum.com and you will find thread after thread after thread on this topic.

As for the shifting, what oil are you using vs what you had in it before. How many miles on the clutch? Wheelies?

We'll see, it went out on my 98 and 00 750's. When I pick up this 02 shortly, that will be my first modification.

Most bikes make some sort of noise. The only bikes that do not make noises that annoy me are Hondas. Those things are really well built. I checked r1-forum and apparently its normal. The exup valve. It usually goes away with a valve adjustment, but always comes back. It does not bother me much. The R1 has a legendary motor.

There is a guy on the forums who put 150,000 miles on his r1. And now has a 02.

Katie, let me find out you are a yamaha hater and suzuki lover!!

Good thing you didn't buy a 954, Honda's version of the EXUP valve is even noisier than Yamaha's! No

8000 and you are posting that nothing went wrong? I should freekin hope not... if anything failed on my bike at 8000 miles, I would be on the phone with the mfg raising hell.

My ninja has 37,000 on the new motor and not a single thing has ever gone wrong until I twisted the clutch basket off the flywheel doing a wheelie. My fault, not kawasakis.

If all these problems showed up after a servicing as you suggest, I'd be double checking my work. Did you use a different oil than before? Maybe you used a weight too heavy for this weather?

I run a 0w-40 full synthetic year round. My bike shifts smooth as butter in the coldest temps.
