WARNING!!! Aftermarket Gas Caps - April 23, 2007, 09:37 PM

OK I get home from work on the Duke and the ZRX has puked all its gas out!!! Just sitting there but I noticed the gas tank looks a little bloated so I un screw the cap and the tank deflates. I use a Vortex gas cap. It turns out the vent was stuck closed and with the bike in the sun she was ready to split. But wait it gets better. The tank pressured up enough to push gas into all my cylinders and hydrolock the motor. Yea!! So I pull the plugs and turn over the motor and shot raw gas 20 feet up in the air!!! Cleaned off everything and used compressed air to clean out the motor and throw new plugs in. She starts up but now runs like shit!! Gonna work on it later. So if you run an aftermarket gas cap make sure it will vent. I took my ball and spring valve out and now it vents fine. Here is to Vortex for almost costing me a motor!

Dude, check your oil. That much gas in the cyls probably got a substantial volume passed your rings and down in your crank case, thinning your oil. For the cost, I'd drop it out and replace. In fact, I had to do this last summer on my bandit after all kinds of jet probs.

I had the same thing happen to a car of mine. I even bought a factory gas cap. Thanks to VW's half year model year deal, I gambled and bought the cap that "looked right". It wasn't vented. The first hot summer day it split the seams in my gas tank and dumped 10 gallons of hightest all over the parking lot.

A $20 gas cap ended up costing me just under $1000.

the caps are originally made for race...not really for everyday use.

OrangeShritDude thanks yea I need to change the oil but will do that today.

iceblizzxdc this cap is on my weekend bike which I ride about 2 times a month so it is not everyday use. And it would still do it on a race bike also!
