So I finally got some free time (yeah yeah) to put the site under a microscope (profiler) and see what exactly was eating up all the CPU when you go to a page.

Turns out 90% of the processing was on a single SQL call that was inside the Last 20 Posts block on the left side. This single query took sometimes 7-8 seconds causing EVERY page to take 7-8 seconds longer to load.

If you notice now that I deactivated the block, the site is mucho faster.

So the question is, do you miss it? I personally never used it, as I rely on "Today's Messages" link at the top that shows all the threads that have been posted in in the last 48 hours.

But if we get enough votes to bring it back, I'll write a better one that is more streamlined and won't have one kludgy SQL call that takes forever to process.

So, post up... vote up... Do you care?

rob

Don't worry bout the 20 Posts lists. The site is so much faster without it.

I always use Today's Messages. I didn't even notice the last 20 post column so I don't miss it at all. Keep up the good work Rob.

I say leave the Last 20 Posts SQL off...No real need for it, I use Today's Messages as well, and if it'll speed up the site, I say do it!

Kill it Rob....Ive never once used it.....question is could you make the boom box self refresh every so often?? I know Im out dated and still got dial up at the house so the refresh takes me forever any way so a self refresh on the boom box would be pretty cool!! Just a thought.

Johnny, I think if you right click in the boom box and click on refresh it will just refresh the boom box. Might be quicker, and it won't slow down the site.

Actually when you refresh the boom box like that, it sends a duplicate of the very last thing you typed.
