My 75mph stoppie - August 19, 2008, 10:37 PM

So I'm tucked down, cruising on 66 going with the flow of traffic approx 70-80 depending which stretch of road I'm on, and just passing the Centreville exit with only a couple of miles to go. Just about to pass the rest area heading west, when suddenly this **** in a white lexus suv comes over two lanes at which point I had 2 choices, get smacked into the emergency lane or grab a hand full of brake; I chose the latter. Having mishaps in the past when applying the rear brake, I'm most comfortable with the front only. So, while I was protecting my life, everyone behind me got one hell of a stunt show.

After most of the shakes decreased, I passed, gave her the eye and finger and just like a dog when you rub it's nose in shit, she had no idea why.

I wasn't planning on typing this up, but I figured someone might get something out of it. As for me, I'm gonna practice using the front and rear.

-cheers

If you are moving fast enough and grab hard enough:

Damn. Glad it wasn't anything worse then that. Just another reminder to use both brakes especially, when doing an emergency stop/slow down. I swear the people heading to Manassas and further out are getting worse and worse. A woman in a huge ass SUV was riding this cruisers ass the other day. It was so bad that when he finally got over so she could pass, she actually brushed him with her mirror. I started cursing at her when I caught up with her. Stupid.

The only time I use my rear brake is when I'm in the grass. So pretty much all the time.

Beat you fuckers to it that time.

Braking - August 20, 2008, 07:19 AM

I truly feel your pain bro...., don't shy away from the back brake, it can be very useful at times.

Practice applying both brakes at the same time thus, using 25% back brake and 75% front. That should give you, close to the maximum braking power potential of your machine.

Glad to hear that you avoided the Lexus....,

I can use both the front and rear brakes pretty well. Go to a parking lot away from cars and anyone else and practice braking really hard w/the rear brake. Do soft rear brake and hard rear brake. You can control the rear wheel pretty well imo.

Yes you should practice braking with all front, all rear and then a mix of both just to get a good feel for what your bike does.

I second Jonathan on that one. Its usually more predictable than you would think as long as you're on a straight line. The rear end comes loose a bit but as long as you have your weight allocated to the front a little the tail end comes back in line. Learned that at the track. It was scary at first but once you get through it a couple of times you're fine with it. Oh, and try to softly apply the rear first then the front. Obviously its a split second move and being a newbie such as myself its still not mastered.

I don't understand why people are in full tucks on 66 going with the flow of traffic? Glad you didn't get hurt..
