New tipe of Pitbike - February 1, 2011, 11:54 AM

So my very good friend in Italy and I started a concept almost 4 years ago to have Italian designed pitbikes for the European market, built from selected Chinese manufacturers.

Since then he went on to make that into his main line of work and now he does it full time. He organizes his own one make championship and had his bikes racing and winning in the nationals both with offroad versions of the bikes (so small MX bikes) and with track bikes (so Mini Motards).

Now he has come up with a new concept of pitbike that should appeal more to the track racer, basically a 1:2 version of a crotch rocket.

The bike is still small enough to not require a trailer (just remove fairings and load into any medium sized car), it has a 150 4-stroke engine and is proving to be faster than the Motards (that generally share the same engine) because of the fairings and the better suited-for-tracks riding position.

Here are some shots of the first prototype (it was unveiled at the recent World Ducati Weekend in Italy). I have been told that the final bike's looks will be more radical, sporting an undertail exhaust and a cast rear swingarm too. Suspension is adjustable.

Keep in mind this is a pre-production.

I would love to know what you think about them, consider it a cheap version of proper market research, LOL

Here are some pics from the WDW:

Now gimme some feedback, good and bad.

I was a little confused about the size until I saw the pic of it next to the 1198. Then I realized how much smaller it was than a normal size bike. Looks sweet.

Very cool looking.

That will cost me a lot of money when I crash it.

Personally I think it's cool but the "appeal" of the pitbike is that it's something different than your actual race bike...

at least that's my opinion. I can't see why someone would want to race then ride around in the pit on a similar looking sportbike versus the chopped up/motorcross pit bikes and scooters.

What do you value more? Life or Image?

Looks hot ,Leo. Some race tracks within driving distance (Beaverun, Summit VIR) have go kart tracks on site that these look well suited for.

IMO the "appeal" of a pit bik is how useful it is and it's hard to beat a step through scooter. You can put a fuel jug between your legs or wheel to take over to the tire vendor. Since there's no clutch hand needed you can carry your take offs back with you, or just ride around sipping a cup of coffee.

If I was going for style points in a pit bike it would be a vintage trials bike.

The price is in line with decent pitbikes (not official yet so I can't throw any numbers, and it's a price for Italy so doesn't really apply here).

Not sure about the pretty fairings, but I would assume they are meant to be on that kind of bike so they should be able to take some abuse.

He said that when he gets the first production version in, he'll send me one to try it out and see how it compares.

What kind of pit-bikes do you guys see most around? What brands/models?
