Deus Ex Machina's Buell Lightning X1 Bully - October 7, 2013, 08:22 PM

Proving that good things do come from the West coast. DM's Cali office produced this:

The bruised and battered X1 underwent a series of frame surgeries to get it back in shape. With an entirely new subframe and swingarm in place Woolie then started his Cafe Racer style build with an aim to use as many American made parts as possible. Rizoma USA provided the bulk of the colour coded, anodised goodies bolted to its engine and the handmade brake reservoir you can see sitting proud on the bars was created by Works Performance.

Pretty wreckless of them to bring a harley motor that close to a body of water would hate to see a mini exxon valdez. If anyone knows how dangerous it is to have a motorcycle near a body of water it is me! I am an expert in this field!

Nice rear shock linkage.

It looks cool... from an engineering standpoint I see a lot of fail.

Meh, i'm pretty sure Woolaway has that covered. I hear he went to the best schools and also posted about this design many years ago...

Let's not forget they started with a Lightning. This one is lighter, has upgraded suspension and brakes and puts out more ponies. I'm not one to call that fail.

We'll see what's a fail when that rear linkage gets biffed by a speed bump... but then what would I know about motorcycles.

Aside from the angle of the shock, it doesn't appear any lower than the OEM mount on the old tube frame buells. Which I had zero issues with regarding speed bumps.

It would probably be ok. It might get pretty dirty and would definitely be subject to much more wear/damage placed there.

Erick Buell wasn't the most revolutionary engineer. I don't have a lot of respect for his work in general... especially after I saw an A bike, B bike, and then a C motor in the A bike all blow up on a Saturday morning race practice.

If the Japanese aren't doing it, there's probably a reason. Anyway it's a fancy little trinket. I wouldn't spend my money there, personally, and I'm not really impressed.

racing is a cruel mistress. I like some of the stuff he came out with. His stuff sells more on character than it does for the development.

Moto Guzzi is the same way.

lol. Tell me about the schools of engineering you went to and which classes you took, or did you foretell this when the Lightning first came out?

I see "it would probably be ok" is a far cry from "engineering fail"

Still one of the better looking sportsters out there (not saying much, I know)

You do realize, B, that the use of shitty motors was mandated by HD all the way until the end, right?

Look at what happened as soon as EBR became independent?

No one can argue with the results last year. Amazing for a small company
