Should I get the extended warranty - March 26, 2009, 01:21 PM

I searched for a thread about this an didn't find one...

The history of the bike is that it was titled by Buell Motor Corp and used as one of there demo bikes around the country when they were promoting the 2008's... it was taken care of by Buell Engineers and shouldn't have any issues...

To make a long story slightly shorter, I am purchasing a 2008 Buell Firebolt XB12R Black/Red from a Harley dealership in Montana and they are offering an extended warranty in the following increments:
1 year - $799.99
2 years - $899.99
3 years - $999.99
4 years - $1099.99

...it is an extension of the current Manufacturer's wheel to wheel warranty...

it basically covers everything but normal wear and tear, belts, hoses, brakes, fluids, and the normal stuff...

plus they'll bring you gas if you run out, replace a bent rim, a free tow, compensate for lodging and meals (for when the bike is getting fixed), replace the tire if you puncture it, and a couple other cool things...

the questions on the table?

would you get it for a 2008 Buell Firebolt XB12R?
and for what term?

Frank

an oh yeah, 1st post... hey all! look forward to riding with some of you!

it's the same as above, 2 years (it ends in June of 2009) bumper to bumper... essentially!

From what I have seen (I have worked in an HD/Buell service department for the last 5 years) newer Buells rarely come in for work outside of regular maintenance, which isnít under warranty. The warranty comes in handy if the bike was properly taken care of (which they can deny your claim if you failed on your end to keep up with it) and still failed.

I say if it would help you sleep better at night, get it. I purchased a 4yr esp and have not needed it thus far, but who knows. If you are going to put a lot of miles on the bike (and I have seen plenty of buells running fine with 50k+) then it might be smart to get one. If you are going to let it be a garage decoration and put 1k on it a year, then I think you could do without it.

ESP (extended service plan) is right, warranties are free.

I think it would definitely help me feel better about the next 4 years of the bike...

after some research, it appears that's not as common of an occurance for buell's to come in with issues... they seem to be more reliable... I see alot of more of the "never had an issue" posts versus the "I've had multiple issues" posts

thanks, this post was just a tad bit more helpful than the oh so extremely description one above my reply...

dude I would not buy an ESP. The bikes are reliable as hell.
besides oil change trans. and one tune up and 4 sets of tires. i have not spend any money. i have had my bike for over 5 years now and over 40k.

Very easy to find bad comments about anything because it is human nature and we don't report the good.

true... but wondering if it's worth the extra 1200 over 18 months for the ESP for peace of mind for 4 years...

or do I already have that because I'm getting an 08 firebolt xb12r???

Here are a couple of options:

1. Keep your existing warranty and renew it (with the ESP) before it runs out if you still feel you need it
2. Negotiate a better price on the warranty (remember that everything is negotiable)
3. Learn to work on your own bike

I chose option 3 with my K7 750

You only have 2 years so this would be an additional 2 correct?
I have the extended on my Harley but if I had it to do all over again I probably wouldn't have done it. I have changed so many things on it along with the ECU that it wouldn't be covered anyway. Plus Harleys are a lot more reliable than they were when all the stereotypes started.
If mine leaks oil, it's my fault LOL!

It is something you have to figure out for yourself and how much risk you are willing to take.
