Drop Buell and now buy Ducati? HD doesn't seem to have a long term strategy. Besides, all the HD service bays are already full, how can they accommodate the Ducs?

I was actually considering getting a Panigale but if HD buys it, I'm going to have to wait and see.

It would be interesting to see how it works out if this happens. Ducati has the most harley like shops (kind of boutique-ish) and really goes for the lifestyle aspect like harley. If ducati were able to continue to operate independently it might not be so bad. Has ducati actually seen money from the "bottomless pockets of Audi/VW"? I can't imagine they're actually putting a lot of money towards anything but trying to recover the image of their main brands (Audi/VW) with the diesel fiasco.

Ducati's seen some money from Audi/VW as you can see with the marked improvement of their MotoGP bikes, Jorge's salary, expansion of their bike product lines. I think it's the diesel fiasco and its resulting low profits due to consumer backlash that's forcing them to sell Ducati.

I would say in racing....yes.
If you look at how they operated before and after Audi brought them out.
The money seemed bottomless and even the announcers joked about it.

Remember the MV Agusta fiasco? In any event, Ducatis haven't been quality bikes for a good while.

I'm not convinced that the difference was additional spending on the GP effort. They spent a lot of money to get Rossi too. I would think the change in how they managed things had more to do with the failure to do good things with Rossi there, and his subsequent return to Yamaha, than it did with additional dollars. That is, the Rossi situation was a wake up call. That said I, of course, have no insider info.

Rossi was before the buy out of course, and they had to cut the 2nd riders salary in order to compensate and they reduced funds to other motorcycle development. Audi did offer a streamline and fast paced way for Ducati to get prototypes. But they still was spending on talent..GiGi if i remember salary was substantial to leave Aprila. Also they are the only team running 8 bikes (honda with 6 but sold to teams)

The diesel fiasco I'm sure hurt but companies like this take out huge insurance policies for things like this.

Yeah I am old enough to know better. Thing is, I just don't care.

Ducati and HD run a very similar shop in terms of their dealership networks and great customer service. Only thing I worry about is HD's view on selling motorcycles. They are all about selling the name and brand for as long as they can regardless of how old and comparably weak their technology gets compared to the competition.

My 2013 Victory Vision (which has been exactly the same since 200 out handles, out brakes, and out performs any of it's HD competitors from 2016. Finally with the 2017 Milwaukee 8 and some chassis improvements they're on par. But again with a bike from 2008...

Harley is a premium lifestyle brand with an almost glacial pace of product evolution.

Ducati is a premium lifestyle brand that until 6-7 years ago had a product evolution that moved at the pace of a melting iceberg.

Both trade heavily on their image and perceived brand cache and aspirational nature even if the actual product is woefully off the pace of its contemporaries.

The synergies are clear. I can see why HD would be interested in purchasing it.

“Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a Prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires”.

- Nicolo Machiavelli 1469-1527
