Talking 2013 ZX10R - July 9, 2012, 06:20 PM

2013 Kawasaki Early-Release Models
ABS now optional on Ninja 650, electronic steering damper added to ZX-10R, plus new graphics/colors

Kawasaki has just released news about changes to four of its existing models for 2013, including the addition of an electronic steering damper to the potent ZX-10R and the option of adding antilock brakes to the versatile Ninja 650. As for new bikes in the pipeline, we expect a couple of announcements in September.
ZX-10R

Kawasaki’s superbike has been the leader among Asian literbikes since its ground-up revamp in 2011, and it came out on top in our 2012 Japanese Superbike Shootout based on its class-leading horsepower, lightest weight and bleeding edge technology.

Steering dampers aren’t often a prime topic when discussing liter-sized sportbikes, but Kawasaki hasn’t excelled with the stabilizers employed on the 10R. Recent 1000cc Ninjas have been equipped with Ohlins steering dampers, but they’ve always been light on control and adjustability despite Ohlins’ estimable reputation; they build ‘em to Kawasaki’s specifications.

Meanwhile, Japanese rivals have fitted electronically controlled units that vary damping force according to speed, and their variable nature boasts soft damping at low speeds for maximum agility while maintaining stiff settings when needed at high speeds for optimum stability.

So, the addition of an Ohlins electronic steering damper to the ZX will likely bring the Kawi up to par with its competition in that regard. Using Ohlins patented twin-tube design, a dedicated ECU mounted under the fuel tank cover varies damping based not only on rear-wheel speed, but also the rate of acceleration and deceleration.

Otherwise, the only thing new about the 10R is the addition of a Pearl Flat White color option alongside the traditional Lime Green hue associated with Kawasaki’s sportbikes. MSRPs of both the standard model and the ABS version are up $300, to $14,299 and $15,299, respectively. The 2013 ZX-10 is expected to hit dealers in September

This steering damper senses acceleration

Unlike previous electronic steering damper designs, this new Ohlins unit fitted to the otherwise-unchanged 2013 Kawasaki ZX-10R uses acceleration and deceleration data, in addition to speed, to inform damping rates. The idea here is simple — propensity for instability increases not just with speed, but with the rate that speed is changing too. Higher damping rates are needed just as much at 55mph as they are at 155, if the bike is accelerating or slowing rapidly. By adding that data to the algorithm, Ohlins and Kawasaki are able to keep steering effort low, while expanding safety to lower speeds. That added sophistication requires a dedicated ECU located under the tank cover and comes with a $300 price increase (likely due to exchange rates). Using data like this is made easier by the adoption of traction control, which already gathers the data from wheel speed sensors.

When is the ZX6R getting a redesign? It's been 3 years. I'm sure it will be the same for 2013 so that is 4 years. Used to be new every 2 years.

If I were to get a liter bike it would be between this and the BMW but I'd probably lean towards this. Kawi is smart by adding 650r ABS as well. That is probably my new favorite bike to suggest to newbs.

I guess the 2 year cycle is gone until the economy truly bottoms out and rebounds. Could be a decade, or could be gone for good. I like the changes to the steering damper. Talk of adding new feedback loops and changing the algorithms gets me all kinds of excited

Random thought...

Is that steering damper still going to be similar to the watered down crap Kawi spec Ohlin's that they have been using? That would be terrible if they did...

The 10R has grown on me like a fungus. was not a big fan of this present body shape but the longer it is around the more I like it.

That and I am just happy to see Sykes representing for Kawi is WSBK.
