01-03 GSXR gas tank question - March 20, 2006, 10:02 AM

So I bought a used tank for my bike. It's a GSXR tank manufactured in '02. But there's a difference between the original tank and this new one. On the original tank below the hinge on the right is a vent hose, as expected. On the left there is a dimple implying Suzuki left the door open for something to go there but didn't put anything there.

On the new tank that dimple has a fitting coming out of it and it bends 90 degrees towards the vent hose. It's almost as if the "new" design has an extra hose that Ts with the vent hose. Anyone familiar enough with this to comment? The tank either came off an '02 600 or '2 750, I was told an '02 600 but even the gas cap is different in terms of mounting. I know they share 99% of the same parts with some changes but this isn't a change I expected.

just guessing, but maybe it came off a California bike where they have extra venting for emissions.

I'm going to be calling people shortly. I need to know for fact, I don't want to be running around VIR this weekend thinking "oh it's just another vent" and then find out it's a return line for something my Gixxer doesn't have.

Brooks - that's an excellent reason for it to be another vent. The tank did have some California racing school stickers on it, and he was USMC - could have been stationed at Pendleton when he bought the bike.

One vent is the fuel overflow. Overfill the gas tank, that's where the excess gas is routed.

The other is an air vent to let air back into the tank as the fuel level drops, otherwise the tank will develop a vacuum that the fuel pump can't overcome and you'll get running out of gas symptoms. It's important not to crimp this hose when you drop the tank.

One of the vents is a bit larger than the other, can't remember which, and requires a slightly larger hose.

Cool. So basically just route a house down to where your coolant overflow routes out and you should be good to go.

Werd, so just attach a separate hose and drop it down along the other and I'm good to go.

Thanks a lot. My mind is now more at ease. Just gotta find a working gas cap now, haha.
