Speed Triples - April 25, 2012, 03:38 PM

Last bike I had was an 05 Triple. Liked the bike, had a couple of complaints. The new Triples, are they any different from the 05's? What do you like about it, hate about it?

1st gear wheelies. Constantly. Could that have anything to do with it?

What were your complaints? The motor is essentially unchanged since '05... the stator and R/R have been upgraded since, but that's about it. Some hoses/ wires rerouted...

The frame/ swingarm/ everything else was all new for 2011. Stock suspension is decent (better than 05 definitely), brakes are damn good.

How's the engine? And the headgasket?

Brakes got soft pretty quick, no top end power, hated the engine whine noise. Biggest complaint is the lack of parts/dealer availability. I wished the Triple was made by Honda or Kaw or some other major bike brand. I had a charging/battery issue and could not fix it. Still have the bike in my storage unit out in the sticks. Right now it's a huge 600 lbs paperweight collecting dust bunnies.

Did you get the warranty fix for the brakes?

Still has no top end power. It's a long stroke triple, it's not going to. Is slow to rev, and can't rev that high. The 1050 is just a stroked 955i. If you want top end, get an i-4. Or V-4.. (Ape). So what did you like about the triple then? Its strength is midrange, and the torque curve is a flat table.

I have never waited long for parts... once the dealer actually ordered the right ones. Triumph has a huge warehouse down in Atlanta that probably has what you need... a good dealer is few and far between though... and I just got word today that Clinton Cycles in MD isn't going to be carrying Triumph any longer.

Sounds like you had the R/R issue... it's an easy fix man. Search the Triumph Rat forums, upgrade to a better one.

Low end and mid range were awesome. Turning with a handle bar versus clip-ons is awesome. Riding the bike was a good experience the other stuff was a turn off. Replaced the regulator twice stator once. Still no go. If you have good experience finding parts then they've made that better cause in 06' I waited a long time for parts.

Have an '06 Triple. It's the easiest bike that I've ever ridden. I had been on sportbikes with clip-ons for years and was worried about changing to handle bars, but like you, I found that it was no big deal. I actually prefer the Speed Triple's bars and ergonomics.

The linear torque is, of course, awesome, especially when driving around town. My previous bike was an '06 R6, which had a polar opposite engine--just leaving a stoplight was an adventure with that high-strung inline 4 with zero low to mid-range power. The Triple doesn't have any of those issues, that's for sure. And the Triple's engine just sounds phenomenal.

Haven't needed anything Triumph-specific parts-wise besides things like brake pads, and RnR always found what I needed. And if there comes a time when they couldn't get what I needed, I'd order from Team Triumph in Wisconsin (Team Triumph - Home), which was my go-to place when I had a Speed Four.

Problems? The battery died on me--not the bike's fault. It had the weird oil leak near the kickstand that some have experienced. Some cleaning and loctite seemed to fix that. The transmission has been described as agrarian, which I somewhat agree with. That's where my R6 was superior with its slick slipper clutch.

I wish that I could build a Triple to 9/10 scale. I'm not a big guy, and slightly less height and weight would make the bike absolutely perfect for me. But as it is, it's so well-balanced that it's not a huge deal, aside from the time that I dropped it because it was too heavy to hold up when I stalled out doing a low speed turn (sigh).

By nature, I always have an eye out for other bikes, but when I go back and look at my Triple, I'm like, "Why would I want anything else?" It's a great commuter, I've sport toured comfortably on it and it looks f*cking awesome. And I'm sure that it will be just fine on the track when I finally take it there. Plus, I got an awesome deal when I bought it.

Tex. RnR can do work on the Triple? Would you take it to them to diagnose/fix a tricky problem?

If the guys at RnR can keep Buell's running, they can do ANYTHING!
