08 R1 engine noise - April 14, 2009, 09:54 AM

Has anyone had any problems w/ 07/08 R1's having a rattling/knocking noise at high rpm, and also when I ride for a few hours, shut the motor off and let it sit for about 20 minutes, it makes a rattling/knocking noise on startup. It sounds like accessive bearing play, but im not sure w/ bikes. If anyone has any info on this please let me know.

Ya it's still under warranty,i took it in to champion in sterling and they said they could'nt hear any noise, but i doubt they took it for a ride long enough to get it nice and hot, or had it WOT.

Stupid question here so forgive me. Are you sure it's coming from the engine? Sometimes fasteners and such can vibrate only at certain RPM. Just throwing it out there.

went thru same thing last year with my 07 r1, search my post on 07 r1 motor failure, dealer at first thought it was bad cam chain tensioner, turned out to be blown crank bearing, which in turn damaged rod and head, bike was in shop for 2 mos before i got it back. tech informed me that there were a number of 07,s with this same problem . problem started with defective crankshaft. yami honered warranty and replaced all affected parts. when i got it back i pounded the shit out of it, no problems since.

From the link boostdacr posted.
Man that would suck. It is so hard getting someone to go into a motor far enough to find some stuff. Someone has to first hear it.

If you're in Sterling, I'd run it by RnR Cycles and talk to Rick about it. His shop is near the Best Buy in Sterling.

I think he was going to but wanted to take it to a dealer to get it covered under warranty.

I talked to rick and he said it might be the timing chain tensioner,it's definiatly coming from the engine.
