2009 Yamaha R1... Gutless? - July 8, 2009, 04:27 PM

Anyone seen the 2009 Sportrider liter bike shoot-out article? I hear they harshed on the R1 big time.

I have not bought a copy yet.

I've heard it was a bit underpowered and overweight,
Cycle World says the same thing but it did go well in laptimes vs the other liter bikes.

My 09 R1 - Full akro, untuned vs My buddy's 06 ZX-10 w/ full akro, pc3 tuned, TRE - 178hp to the wheel

We were side by side from a 40mph-150mph roll on.. He had an empty tank of gas, and I had a full tank. Both experienced riders.. I weigh 185-190, he weighs 230.

It was an interesting read. I was surprised which 1K they chose as their "winner".

Is it true that the thing is 477 lbs dry? Or did I misread that? Maybe I saw 427. I don't remember.

I rode Stan's and I really liked that there was no buzzing or vibration from the engine at all. The only time I felt it was in the seat when I twisted the throttle. The ergos are pretty good too.

To me, top speed doesn't really mean that much. I felt like the R1 has a lot of grunt where you use it most.

Not exactly sure what the weight is, but whatever you read was wet weight. I should take mine to a landfill and see if they'll weigh it for me..of course it won't be the stock weight since I shed a few lbs off the bike..

Maybe it's 477 lbs w/ stock exhaust cans.

Probably.. Those things were massive. The cat/Y-pipe was pretty heavy as well..
