$290,000 Speeding ticket - January 8, 2010, 12:40 AM

Ok I saw I nunya's post for a speeding ticket @ $219,000, but this one is the highest speeding to date, worldwide.

ST. GALLEN, Switzerland A Swiss court has slapped a wealthy speeder with a chalet-sized fine a full $290,000.
Judges at the cantonal court in St. Gallen, in eastern Switzerland, based the record-breaking fine on the speeder's estimated wealth of over $20 million.
A statement on the court's Web site says the driver a repeat offender drove up to 35 miles an hour (57 kilometers an hour) faster than the 50-mile-an-hour (80-kilometer-an-hour) limit.
Court clerk Heidi Baumann-Becker said Thursday the unidentified driver can appeal the decision, handed down in November, to the Swiss supreme court.
The Blick daily newspaper in Zurich reported the fine was more than twice the previous Swiss record of about $107,000.

If they based the fines around here on net worth, I could speed all day long for close to nothing.

I disagree, if the purpose of speeding tickets is to try and detour one from committing the offense again it actually makes a lot of sense.

If someone who makes $7hr gets a $100 fine that is all of his disposable income for maybe 2 pay checks and hurts really bad. They are unlikely to want to keep offending.

On the other hand, someone who makes $20million a year couldn't care less about $100, $500 or even $1000. If they are a repeat offender then obviously the tickets aren't doing their intended purpose (which some say isn't revenue but to prevent accidents) and being able to raise the fine to something that would cause them to stop and think sounds very reasonable to me.

A $50 no seat belt ticket means nothing to me and I have had 2 since they made it law in Maryland and I still don't wear one.
A $500 ticket for speeding hurt a lot and I have since tried to pay more attention to how fast i am going.

I doubt they would reduce the fines but increasing them makes sense to me...

What the fuck kind of role model are you

true, it's a good way to deter the people that normally wouldn't give two shits about the ticket, but a different penalty for the same exact offense is shitty. they have min and max fines for offenses though. so if a judge is sitting in front of a millionaire they could obviosly pick the higher fine, but there's gotta be a limit. just because I guy makes a load of money doesn't mean he should get fucked harder by the law

So are the police going to only target the 'high end' cars that are speeding so they can generate more $$ out of them than pulling over a POS traveling at the same speed b/c they have a chance at a higher new worth?? Speeding tickets give the government a LOT of income and IS a source for their budget. I can see them profiling the wealthier drivers so their pockets get fatter. Thats messed up if you ask me.

First offense or maybe even a couple of times I agree they should be treated like everyone else. Eventually though if someone isn't getting the message I can see it being a very effective method.
The wealthy often think they can do anything they want because they have the money to get out of it and I also think that's bullshit. You see one side, I see the other.

N2...you don't strike me as a socialist in other threads. Since when should the government be able to take based upon your income (aside from taxes that are already regressive against the wealthy).

My comments many times are just to show the other side and I can see why they would do this and I put my line of thought down to show it.
Do I really want it to happen... No!

If you make xxx amount of money should you have to pay double what someone pays for a gallon of milk just cause you can? No
I can see where the wealthy and the famous however are going to get made examples of.
