Post **Looking 4 SQL Training/Jumpstart Class in DMV area. - January 4, 2010, 04:12 PM

There are tons of DBA's on .NET and Dot Com... So i figured you guys can Point me in the right direction

Anyone know of any SQL Training classes In the DC area that’s pretty good?

If I had to choose a tool to accompany the SQL language it would be MS Sequel Server 1st.
or
My SQL as a second choice. (Im practicing this now, but use MS Sequal Server @ Work)

I have the self taught books and all, but my current contract is written to show some kind of continued training for our our Clients.

It don’t have to be accredited or anything...

Im looking for something with just the basic programming language and touch on MS Sequel server.

Here is a course set up that im looking for, but the class is over and nothing set up any time soon.

http://www.jumpstartlab.com/courses/sql/091114/

Level 1 Course

90% of what you need to know about databases can be learned in this workshop. Here are the main topics that will be covered:
  • Modeling Data
    • Thinking about the nature and form of your data
    • Understanding how data relates to each other (One-to-One, One-to-Many, Many-to-Many)
    • Identifying and linking data
    • Defining the datatypes and purity of data
  • Building and Maintaining Tables
    • Creating tables and columns
    • Adding data
    • Adding and deleting columns
  • Querying a Database
    • Basic select statements
    • Selects with JOIN statements
    • Using LIMIT to restrict the number of results
    • Using ORDER to define the order of results
  • Automation
    • Creating sequences for automated numbering
    • Using default field values
    • Creating basic TRIGGER actions
  • Administrating a Database
    • Choosing a database platform
    • Creating users and handling permissions
    • Basic backup, transfer, and restoration
We’ll focus on “real-world” projects like the following:
Rivet Corporation

The Rivet Corp started as a small home business, but their growth has been quick and their data is getting out of control. Ricky Rivet, CEO, declares that it’s time for a database — “Get that data organized!” Here’s what you’ll need it to track:
  • all employees, their personal information, and their employment history
  • the big projects currently going on along with the tasks that makeup that project
  • who each task is assigned to
  • all supplier contact information
  • current products and inventory
  • customer information
  • customer orders
As you build this database, organize and enter data, then run queries you’ll practice all steps of database design, maintenance, and usage.

New Horizons offers SQL courses http://www.newhorizons.com/content/c...px?keyword=SQL

NVCC used to have an online introductory SQL class, but I can't find any information on it anymore. But they do offer a SQL Server: SQL Programming and Relational Database course at their Loudoun Campus.

The best I could find is the one i first listed...the 3 day course. I have the Sams Teach yourself series on it.

Im going to register for it tomorrow. march 8th, 9th, 10th. You dont have to pay for it until 2 or 3 weeks prior...actualy when I called today they said you can pay for it like 2 days ahead of Class. 4 locations around here, but I think they are going to combine them into one class since all 3 locations are less then 10 miles of each other.

The DBA's at my job said its a real good jump on point with the course they set up.

My gig will pay for it, but I have to stay for 2 years and id have to use my leave/time off for the class.

I'm going to ask if I can just pay for it myself and they let me take off with pay.

But I am excited...

damn man.. I can teach you everything you need to know to use sql in like 30 minutes.
Its a really simple language at its core especially if you are putting queries in code.
There are only a couple of things you really need to do..
Create tables and indexes..
Simple query and query with a join or subselect. insert and update..
That's about it.. You can get 90% of everything you ever need done with just those.

Each one tends to do a few things a little differently, especially where built-in functions are concerned (such as time/date math) and the command-line to connect to the DB in the first place is always different and can be a pain in the ass to figure out sometimes.. But for those differences its really easy to go on the web and see the exact syntax you need.

+1
25 years of Ingres, Informix, Oracle, MySQL, Postgres, Sybase, MsSQL, blah, blah, blah..
They're all basically the same.. lol.. Sybase and MsSQL both kinda suck..
( believe they may be related )..

Maybe this can help too:

http://www.learningtree.com/training...Training-8.htm

I've taken several of their classes (other than SQL)...they get the basics across, I wouldn't say they get too in depth though

There's only two words that describe me, search and destroy.
