2013 "The TOMB: Schwarzenegger and Stallone Go to Jail - December 21, 2012, 12:09 AM

Footage and blurry screenshots from the set of The Tomb went online a couple months back, but today we have our first official look at the prison escape thriller. The film stars Sylvester Stallone as the world’s “foremost authority on structural security” (keep reading…) who, by no accident, ends up wrongly incarcerated in a high-tech prison of his own design.

Arnold Schwarzenegger co-headlines The Tomb, donning a distinguished silver fox look to portray a seasoned inmate of the titular facility (described in an early script review as “Guantanamo Bay 2.0″), who teams with Sly’s character in an effort to stage a dangerous breakout.

Schwarzenegger’s character in The Tomb has been described as an older version of Dutch from Predator, dropping cheesy quips and punching out anyone who gets on his bad side. He and Sly are playing a buddy duo that likewise feel ripped out of the 1980s; in fact, The Tomb sounds like the closest thing we’ll get to a Tango & Cash sequel (with Ah-nuld taking over for Kurt Russell). There are also elements from Red Heat, Lock-Up, and Assassins present in Jason Keller’s rewrite of Milo Chapman’s original script draft for The Tomb – such as how Schwarzenegger is an international cyber terrorist and computer genius (just go with it) whose skills prove essential to his partner’s escape plans.

The Tomb is just the latest in a string of bro-heavy action flicks meant to keep the tradition of (as Sly calls it) male-pattern badness going as long as possible – along with this week’s The Expendables 2 and upcoming titles like The Last Stand, Bullet to the Head, Breacher, and The Unknown Soldier. All of these projects are emanating from a sense of nostalgia – not to mention, Sly and Ah-nuld’s hopes to keep their careers going, even as they’re being pushed toward retirement age.

Then again – when you look at the alternative (Taylor Lautner in Abduction), it’s hard to argue that people like Stallone and Schwarzenegger should not hold off on passing the torch to a new generation (at least, not yet).

The cast of The Tomb also includes people like Jim Caviezel, Vinnie Jones, Curtis Jackson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Amy Ryan, and Sam Neil in supporting roles. It’s directed by Mikael Håfström (1408, The Rite) and looks to reach U.S. theaters sometime in 2013.

We’ll let you know when an official release date for The Tomb has been set.

Tango & Cash Pt. 2?

“Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a Prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires”.

Seems like the writer of the blurb in the original posts agrees.
