4runner help - January 6, 2010, 10:54 AM

So guys my cuz and his gf come in to VA so Im showing them around....

I get pulled over for expired tags, got a warning yay.

So going home to get stuff to go get tags renewed.

On way home it starts to sputter from 0-25mph like it wants to die.
At idle its .5k rpms

So I finally make it home and as I pull in I glance down and my thermostat is almost in the red!!!!

I just put more coolant in it this morning because its leaking a little.

DANGIT ideas?

Cant afford to pay someone to fix it right now

Where is the coolant leaking from.

Sounds like it was over heating to me.

What year 4Runner? The early models were known to blow headgaskets on a regular basis. I think even Toyota came out with a "campaign" to fix vehicles.

There is no need to scare the guy yet. Lets approach this with Tact and look at all the symptoms before jumping right into you have a major problem.

Well I am no mechanic and think the guys at Jiffy Lube are, but doesn't this sound like a thermostat stuck wide open?

It would run cold (allmost no heat) if it was stuck open

It wouldnt be leaking if it was a stuck T-stat.

Jiffy Lube and Mechanic can not be used in the same sentence ever!

Might be the floor mats, but that's just a guess

Fill it up overflow and find your leak/leaks.

Ok so the coolant isnt in the oil. Is there a puddle on the ground in the morning or any signs of coolant leaking on the block at all?

When the truck is running is there white smoke that comes from the exhaust?

Is the passanger floor board wet and smells like coolant?

How offten do you have to refill it with coolant?

Ok so I got it backwards? Couldn't it be stuck shut and he thinks it is leaking because it is overflowing? The only reason I even know this is because I had a similar problem years ago with a Chevy s-10 pickup. Other than that I would suggest the flux capacitor because Cole Trickle taught me about car engines.

Ayyyyeeeeee, sorry for scaring.....

Need to check where the leak is coming from as that can easily cause the temp to rise. Radiator? hoses? coolant pipes? heater core but that prolly inside leak onto the mats...? If it leaks a significant

Correct no coolant in oil, No puddle I see on the ground when parked

Umm well yeah heres the kicker

When I was coming back from being pulled over (when it started sputtering the temp was fine at this time) then when I took off I would say it was prob white/blueish smoke...

I dont know if the passenger side is wet but my cuz said he smelled coolant (I didnt)

I just refilled it today because my heat wasn't working so I checked it and it was low. Before that I think Shoot over a month and a half Id say.

OK...before you think the worse. I want you to check the truck while it is running and see if it is smoking at all. also check the floor board to see if it is wet.

No signs of leaks isnt a good thing but lets see what else is going on before we jump into things.

Fill it up and drive it around the block untill it gets up to temp. whatch the gauge and if it starts to climb into the red get it parked. Look for any signs of leaking when it is hot and running.

Does the truck have heat when it is full of coolant?

Ok while like idling your asking does it smoke?
I know it smokes a little when I first start it up and then every now and then at random times.

yes I have heat when coolant is good.

Ill drive it here in a little while letting it cool down then going to check the coolant again see if its low or the same.

Ill also check the floor board when I take it for a spin.

Looks like the bonk is about to get fixed since this is getting parked lol
