99$ 1TB Drives Free Shipping - April 7, 2009, 09:58 AM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...L0C-_-22136284

Friggin crazy. I remember paying 400$ for a 20MB drive and the thing could double as a door stop since it weighed like 5 lbs.

If you really care about your data, you need two of these, and RAID-1 (mirror) them.

You'll still only have 1TB available (because the other drive is used as a mirror), but when one crashes you will have a backup. Note I said when. Hard drives crash - its only a matter of time.

Make sure your motherboard supports RAID. Most modern mobos do. Also make sure it supports SATA interface (which is what the hard drive in this thread is).

If you don't know what kind of mobo you have, google siw.exe and run it, it will tell you the model of your motherboard. Post it here and I'll tell you if you're golden.

You should be able to reformat it for mac with no issues. As mac will read the FAT32 and NTFS partitions if need be.

Hard drives crash on a mac just as nicely as they do on a PC.

be aware that Rob posted a link for an internal drive and Mike posted a link for an external drive.

And Rob's right, a hard drive can give a damn what OS you put on it eventually it will die.

If it is formatted in FAT you do not need to reformat. If it is in NTFS you can download programs for your mac to read/write to it, if you do not want to reformat. On my external hard drives I usually make a partition and format one in FAT and one in MAC OS, if you go this way make sure FAT is the first partition or windows wont be able to see it.
