Advice from the Golfers of .net - June 17, 2008, 08:05 AM

I know there are some .netters who play golf and I need a little advice!

I don't play a ton, maybe 4 or 5 rounds a summer. But this summer I know i'm gonna be playing closer to 10 or 15 what with all the freaking weddings I'm attending. Right now I'm just going to use my roommates clubs cause we're about the same size, but I need to pick up some shoes and gloves and am wondering if you all have any recommendations on where to look, brands you like, things to look for or aviod, etc, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated, cause i have no idea what i'm looking for!

Thanks in advance!

I've found that Sports Authority has decent prices....and I've heard Golf Galaxy is good, as well.

I wear shoes and clothes from Adidas..Nike Durafeel gloves. But that's just my preference. I may not be a good golfer but at least I look good hacking.

As for places to shop: Washington Golf Center (395 & S. Glebe and Fairfax Circle), Golfdom (Tysons - but a bit pricey). But if you have time, shop online for great deals at EdwinWatts.com. Try out gears at one of these places to give you an idea on size. Dick's is not bad as well, plenty of golf items.

Good luck and have fun!

golf galaxy is good. they have awesome prices on used clubs. and they will fit them for you. that IMO is the best bet if you are on fence on how often you will play next year.

for shoes, hit up golf galaxy again, or try dicks. they always have sales, and are decently priced. for shoes, get something that is comfortable, invest in good comfortable socks too if you are doing lots of walking, and bring those socks on your feet when you try the shoes on. brand is just what your prefer. personally i am a titleist and adidas whore. so I stay taht way.

for balls, i would goto costco and buy the bulk ball, the most balls for your buck, cause at this point you are not worried about feel and spin control.

shoot, if you need help, i will go with you tdoay to golf galaxy and dicks. i was going to try out some clubs today

Eduardo, where are you???

When you buy shoes, I would make sure they are water proof. If it rains a little, it is no fun to walk around in cold, wet, slippery shoes. I wear Dryjoys (footjoy brand) and am really happy with them. Also, comfort is key. Gloves should fit snug when they are new. They will expand a little, and you don't want loose gloves--you may just lose them when you rip a good drive!

Good luck!

Golf Galaxy is a great place to check out... Shoes and Clothes are all subjective, try some things on and buy what fits into your budget.

That would actually be awesome...and appreciated! I live pretty close to there and was going to start checking stuff out today as well, even though I freaking hate that parking lot! What time were you thinking about going? I get off at 3:00, and could probably make it there by 4:00.

sk8santa - mostly everything was covered by everyone - I'll try to add on to their comments

Washington Golf Center (WGC) - there is another one in Chantilly, right near 28 and 50, their Customer service is great. Golf Galaxy can get crowded as hell and a couple time's I've been snubbed there, that's never happened at WGC. They also do fittings and a wide variety of new and used clubs.

Golf balls - Golf Galaxy usually has a pack of used 36 Titleist Pro-V1 for around $35 - Pro-V1 is THE BEST ball there is and even though I can't spin the ball worth a I still buy them - BACK ME UP PAUL!!

you can also get some golf balls (all types) here for cheap http://www.lostgolfballs.com/

Shoes and Clothes - at this time of year, your going to get on the prices. I second this statement:

My preference is Nike for Shoes (Golf Shox II is what I wear) and Footjoy or Titleist golves. Any old polo/collared shirt should do - however, I have noticed that when it gets hot you want something light. I like a lot of the Dockers golf shirts for this.

GET A VISOR!

and when you get out on the course, watch out for this guy:

WGC is good. They have a huge parking lot sale each year. Great way to pick up cheap clubs, balls and other gear.

Also check out Play It Again Sports for a decent selection of used and new equipment.
