Agents of SHIELD: TV show based off Marvel Movies - May 10, 2013, 01:49 AM

Marvel Comics’ apparent conquest of every form of media continues unabated. A week after Iron Man 3 dominated the opening weekend box office, it looks as if parent company Disney is preparing to enter a new arena by officially bringing the Marvel Universe to live-action television with Joss Whedon’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Though Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been going through the casting and scripting process for months, it has yet to be officially picked up by ABC. Recent reports indicate that this will change tomorrow with the announcement of the series’ inclusion in the network’s upcoming schedule.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that ABC will likely announce the official acquisition episodes of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. The announcement will kick off a heavy promotional campaign for the series that will begin during Once Upon a Time on Sunday evening, featuring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s first teaser trailer.

In support of this, a brief (seven second) video appeared on ABC’s YouTube channel today, which appeared to display the Abomination (or maybe the Hulk himself) from The Incredible Hulk raging through the burning streets of what appears to be Harlem (from the Phase One feature film). The video has since been removed from the channel, but it has appeared elsewhere – including the version embedded above. Given that other versions of the teaser have been pulled throughout the day, it may not be available by the time you read this.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to continue the story of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division after the cataclysmic events of The Avengers. Following S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as they investigate and contain incidents in a world flourishing with superpowers, it looks as if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will lend the Marvel Universe a more ground-level, everyday perspective.

The show will star Ming-Na Wen (Eureka), Brett Dalton (Blue Bloods), Chloe Bennett (Nashville), and Clark Gregg (Much Ado About Nothing) as franchise favorite (and former dead guy) Agent Coulson.

Given the amount of time and effort that has gone into assembling the first live-action TV show connected to the Marvel cinematic universe, it would be more of a surprise if ABC did not pick up Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s pilot episode. As such, tomorrow’s announcement feels like something of a formality. That said, it’s exciting that the project will finally get off the ground and begin building hype.

Even at a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it length, the video “teaser” above presents its own set of implications. Showcasing the Abomination not only connects Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to The Avengers‘ greenest, strongest, and angriest character, it also makes the implicit promise that the television series will not skimp on special effects or big scenes of destruction. Whether or not this is a promise can be kept (and whether it is one at all) is up in the air.

More intriguing still is the “Rising Tide” logo in the bottom-right corner of the video. Who does it belong to, and why are they featuring the Abomination ripping apart a city? Perhaps we’ll find out tomorrow during ABC’s announcement. However, given the serialized nature of TV and Whedon’s penchant for stretching out big mysteries, we may have to wait until well into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. before the mystery logo is illuminated.

We don’t yet know when the pilot episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will see the light of day. Keep your eyes peeled to Screen Rant for all the relevant updates.

Could be really good if they come at it right. They need to play it kinda like X-Files meets Warehouse 13 with some liberal sprinkles of Fringe and Men In Black thrown in for flavor. If they come at it from that direction they can explore all kinds of stuff in the Marvel Universe but still have a grounding in reality so it will appeal to the Fanboys as well as the casual fans.

Also, play it smart, NO SUPERHEROS for at least the first half of the season. Let it be about agents with crazy ass gadgets and futuristic tech saving us from shit we don't even know about.
