I was just on MSN and saw this. I wish it applied to the ring I bought Bosslady.

It does not seem to apply to the rings I just bought for my fair lady, either! But, those rings are soooo worth it, 'cuz she is sooo worth it!

The diamond ring I bought was the biggest waste of money ever! I wish I could get a 100% refund... but nope, I am still paying, paying for the next several years! (I'm not bitter at all)

You dont need paper work unless it cost 10k. The purchase has to be between 1994-2006

I wish I hadn't bought one in 95. Seems like I will be paying until my kids hit 18

DeBeers is a cartel? NO!!!!

Seriously though, its not just their fault. A few points to consider:
1. Diamonds, geologically speaking, aren't really rare. In kimberlite deposits they are about 1 part per million...which doesn't sound like alot, but thats about 14ct / cubic yard...and the mining methods are very mechanized (like cubic yards / second)

2. the scarcity of diamonds is due to two factors--limited release of current production (what debeers is in trouble for) and consumer induced scarcity. The first is well evident and obvious, the general thought is DeBeers could cease mining diamonds today, and continue to "supply" the current demand for 10-30 years (using current stores).

The second is where the rub is. Think about it this way, we have been mining diamonds for hundreds of years, and hardcore mining them for 50-100 years, yet they are still rare? The PRIMARY reason for this (it actually out-weighs the limited release of production aspect) is simple...no one sells diamonds.

Thus the "supply" at any one time is virtually (>90%) "new" diamonds. The amount of diamonds that are actually in existance is 30 or more times the amount available for purchase (the supply in supply and demand). Because of this, since they are effectively owned once, diamonds aren't a very elastic commodity (vs. precious metals, production materials, etc, where at a certain point of total inventory, recycling becomes a down-ward forcing part of price--aluminum, copper, gold as examples).

The reason why they are only sold once? Because of the perception that they are rare...and that perception leads to the emotional attachment to what should really be a commodity item.

We did this to ourselves people!

Now, truely rare stones (emeralds for instance are 5-10 times rarer than diamonds), are regarded (incorrectly) as "less rare" and are thus re-sold with greater frequency...which increases the effective supply, makes the economy more elastic and results in, in general, are lower price / ct weight.

You want something really rare, http://www.curiousnotions.com/gemstones/

note though that the price / ct for even the really really rare ones is only a little more than IF-D diamonds of similar size (10-15k/ct)

Hell...get her a plutonium ring with little "gem" of tritium-infused plastic...at $100,000 per gram or more, you have diamond beat by a longshot.

Also, because of the lobbying of large diamond companies (and their countries), synthetic diamonds must be labeled as such...when in fact, properly grown synthetic diamond is chemically, isotopically, and mophologically indistinguishable from mined diamond. Thus people believe that the synthetic stone is somehow inferior to the mined (well, it is, but only in price).

Now here is something to think about...your average platinum engagement ring band weighs about 1.2 grams...if you give your beau at 1.5ct diamond...if you valued the true rarity of the material, the platinum is worth MORE (0.3g of diamond)...as all the platinum ever mined is only ~220 tons. And platinum is a far more useful material.

Also, diamonds aren't the hardest material known...only the hardest naturally occuring one

A few other key facts (courtesy of Wiki):
130 million carats of diamonds mined per year...500 million synthesized

4.5 BILLION carats mined to date (thats about a thousand TONS of diamonds)...meaning the current "supply" is 35x the annual production.
