Let me preface this with some facts. I'm 32 going on 13, ask Ben he knows me or Sidearm. I'm not old and cranky. I think I met my partial twin Pokey once or twice and we are both deranged. I love photography and all things art.

Well, I'm in CT on vacation when my mothers long time best friend comes over. She starts yapping about her son and his "art" and this that and the other. Then my idiot brother wants to see it. We start flipping through his blogspot looking at pics he's posted (he's gay btw AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT...so Im told). Well we see the obligatory bare_chested_weirdo_tatto'ed_heroinfiend, a few penis shots (one involving a noose) and the pièce de résistance was a nice money shot of a vasolined, and hairy cinnamon ring complete with flacid phallus. I mean what the fuck is art coming to???????????


So, my question is to the people who are more into art than me...is this shit for real??? When the fuck did a greasy taint become art????? Is this what Boston art schools are putting out now a days???

Anyone???

I agree on both counts. I'm not saying that the pieces in question are definitively 'not art', but I think they're in the shock/spectacle realm as 2girls1cup. IMO, art is in the intent of its creator; I'm just speculating that this art student intended shock value. I fail at the SAT analogies.

I suppose it's purpose is to capture meaning through expression... even if that meaning is meaningless, grotesque, or vague. I will say when the emotion you evoke is largely shock or disgust, you should probably re-evaluate the calibur of your art. It's much harder to tap into emotions that are more complex than fear... which is the basis of shock.

But I guess that's the difference between bad art and good art.

Call it what it is--Pornography. That's what that is, and nothing more. I always marvel at the effort people will go to get their "creations" called "art" in place of what it really is.

Pornography, garbage, vomit, feces, rotting corpses... these all tend to evoke strong responses, often with an emotional component, yet they are not art. The only way anyone can claim any of these things as art is if they completely redefine the word "art." It's a violoation of a fundamental law of logic, the law of the undistributed middle. It states that two things that have one thing in common do not necessarily have everything in common. Hence, one may not conclude that they are the same. Here are some examples:
  • My dog has two ears. I have two ears. Therefore, I am a dog. Nope. One is a canine, and one is a human.
  • Eggs and feces come out of the same place on a chicken, so they must be the same. Nope. One is for nourishment, and one is for garbage.
  • Landscapes evoke an emotional response and are considered art. Bung holes evoke an emotional response so they too must be art. Nope. One is for nourishment, and one is for garbage.
These are all false conclusions because implicit in the arguments are premises that are untrue.

Nobody's aging nearly as fast as our culture and society are going to the sewers and trash heaps (literally).
