Any A/C people around? - June 6, 2008, 01:35 PM

My house is like 90 degrees. This sucks.

The thermostat says it's on, and the outside unit it running, but the fans aren't blowing downstairs in the unit.

Now, if we switch the heat on, the unit kicks on.

What the fuck?

BTW...we payed a thousand bucks last summer to fix the A/C, then another grand in November to fix the heater. There's no fucking reason this shouldn't be working.

Anybody that knows anything about his kind of stuff around?

Thanks in advance.

Awesome.

BTW....the company that did all the repairs is currently considering taking us to court over an $80 house call that was required when they didn't fix the shit right the first time.

Basically, the heater wasn't working after they fixed it. The tech came out and looked at the thermostat, and said it was bad. But then, he went downstairs and adjusted the blower and it kicked right on.

The dude knew it was their mistake, which I assume is why he didn't bill us. Lo and behold, 3 weeks later we get a bill with a Repair Order stating the thermostat was bad and that we said we'd take care of it. So we called and said, "Um, bullshit. It's working just fine now." So after a bunch of attitude, she calls us back a week later saying she talked to the tech and that he adjusted the blower, which wasn't their fault." Interesting, because that second thousand bucks we played was to replace a blower.

So basically, I can't call them, and I'd rather not call someone else and get charged out the ass if I don't need to.

Why can't things just work right?

Look at the refrigeration lines coming from your condensor outside... are they frozen over? If so, let the bitch defrost for a few hours and fire it up. if they freeze over again you probably have a coolant leak. Which is no fun. I just dropped 5 bills on a new evaporator/coils/etc last year because of this.

No, they're not.

It hasn't ran at all since probably september. So I don't think that's the problem.

BTW...I just put a new filter in a few hours ago.

Mike-LE helped me out last year, hell of a tech.

He replaced something very small and pretty inexpensive, worked like a charm! My thermostat was on, AC was rolling, no fans.

Well, since the blower comes on when you turn the heat on, this probably isn't the problem, but I know that some units have safety switches where you put in a new filter and close it back up that will keep the blower from coming on. Make sure everything is in the right place.

Hmmm...the filter that ours takes isn't readily available, so we have to order in bulk off the intarweb. So I went to Lowes this morning and picked up a "trim-your-own" kind. It fits pretty well, but not perfectly.

Maybe that could be it?

Would it turn on (only to test) without any filter?

Hmmm....

WTF? Hose off the unit downstairs? Or the one outside?
