To any local LEOs...few questions - March 5, 2009, 11:36 AM

Afternoon all. I know someone (Steele11 I believe) posted up something about looking into a career change. I have been thinking about this for a long time now, and I have decided I would like to go for it and try to get into law enforcement. I would like to do a ride along with one of the local departments and possibly sit down with a .net member who is already a LEO in the area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Nice. Yeah I have been thinking I might just do a buck-twenty down 29. That would get me some face time to talk. Don't think it would work out in the long run though.

What area you trying to get into? I was heavily considering a career in LE until a year ago.

I am just trying to get my foot in the door. I would like to get into one of the local sheriffs departments or something along those lines. I know Fairfax County has the academy down in Chantilly, but I can't take that huge hit in pay as a cadet. Living out in Culpeper, there really isnt a lot of openings, so I know I would have to work further in. Honestly I am not too worried about where it is so long as its in/near NOVA. Ideas?

I'm pretty sure there are openings with PWC.

For a ridealong, the easiest thing to do is call your local police department and ask for one, they'll schedule one with you, during which time you can talk to the officer you're riding with about the job, etc.

It's also a good idea to have an idea of what you want to do. What role? Federal or local? An officer for Fairfax county will be a lot different from say a capitol police officer, who will in turn be different from a federal agent, and even the agent roles vary greatly. So what interests you? going on local calls in your neighborhood, riding a police motorcycle around, protection of federal buildings, K9, SWAT, investigating local crimes, investigating financial crimes, doing technical security type stuff, etc. etc. Once you have a better idea of that, people can point you in the right direction, talk to the right people, etc.

This is a barrier to many people that dont start out in LE. Most LE pay is not great, and even if you've had police training before a large majority of departments will need you to retrain, taking a further hit with cadet pay.

FFX is one of the better paying local departments around, so if the're too cheap for you, you're gonna have trouble. Your other option is to look at federal, which usually pays a bit better, but then you're likely communing into DC, and are sometimes subject to transfer. What's the lowest you can live on, that may be your deciding factor right there.

Thanks for the input thus far guys. I would like to end up in one of three counties: Fairfax, Fauquier, or Prince William. I know starting out it would be rough, but I would like to end up on something like a SWAT or SERT team. I know that is fairly hard to get into though so going on local calls wouldbe fine by me. I don't think building security would that bad either.

Thwack dont you do something like that now? I think you work right down the street from me. I work down at HHS.

Good call. I am hoping the next place I go will be where I retire at. We shall see.
