Anybody here hunt squirrel? - November 25, 2007, 11:33 AM

(Note: this is not a weird sexual innuendo, nor is it the intro to a PETA-type rant. It's a serious question.)

If there are any squirrel hunters on the board, I could use your help.

My roommate and I feed our animals a raw diet (www.catnutrition.org, www.rawdogranch.com), and while they will eat the chicken and turkey I prepare, their favorite is rabbit. ()

Given how much they like rabbit, I would love to try them on squirrel, see how they like it.

To do so, I would need roughly 5 pounds of squirrel, skinned and cleaned, but otherwise intact (I can butcher them myself).

I would be happy to discuss terms/prices for your trouble; also, should the pets love it, I would be interested in working out a longer-term arrangement.
I also might want to move on to trying them on groundhog... is there "groundhog season"?

Reply via PM if you want.

I've hunted squirrel, to be honest 5 pounds of squirrel is probably not doable. After you've cleaned them you might get 4-5 ounces of meat out of one at this time of year... plus it's gamier and greasier than rabbit.

Anywho... good luck.

PS - this is the craziest damn request I've ever seen on this board . Congratulations.

When I was growing up my mom fed our cats horse meat. You could buy it in the freezer section at Giant! How crazy is that.

And while this maybe the craziest request in the forums, I bet you there've been some crazier ones via PM

Yes, well. Those of us who feed a species-appropriate diet are not popular with folks who consider rabbits to be pets, not food sources. Caught some flak in the past for it.

I aim to please.

No, actually, you'd be surprised. The reason I ask for them intact is because I use everything (except skin and entrails). To be totally boring - I chunk up what muscle meat there is, set it aside, and grind all the rest. Including the bones.

As far as taste... well, who knows. The furkids may not like it, but I'd like to at least give it a try. I mean, they prefer rabbit to poultry, so who knows what they'll think of squirrel....

Nope. With the entrails removed, any gastrointestinal parasites are removed from the equation. My cat has been on it for 2 years, my roommate's cats and dog over a year, and they are sleek, and beautiful, and healthy as can be.

Seriously, if you're curious, check out www.catnutrition.org. I know the website owner, and she is a very thorough responsible researcher. And one damn smart chica.
