Anyone ever stationed in AU in here? - February 22, 2011, 04:59 PM

I am trying to get a MOS that will give me a high likely hood of being stationed in Australia well I found it, but it is in Alice Springs anyone have first hand experience on living there? Trying to avoid screwing myself.

Never been there, but it's certainly not like being in Perth or Sydney.

It's a long ways from most of everything in Australia. The true Outback.

I almost took a tdy gig in Alice once back in 04 but it was too close to the birth of my son. Civilian job though.

Talking to the guys there, they described it as absolutely nothing for miles. All of them loved it.

thats the wrong idea man. get a job youre interested in or something that can take you places later on in life. if you can get to Okinawa youll have way more fun and theres cheapish flights to AU and all the other pacific places. not to mention getting on cobra gold and all the other 3rd MEF play dates.

That's the catch the only two jobs in the entire USAF I have interest in doing is this duty where you play Macgyver for the AF and TDY out the ass (Technical Applications Specialist).

Or the job I signed up to do in the first place, draftsman/ machinist for a few years (Aircraft Metals Tech).

Hah! Cobra Gold! Jesus...... more like load this here and put that there...training with Thai Marines was cool though.

Tarded, go for it man. If it sucks, you'll find out soon, but it could be a great experience. I have an Embassy SecFor bud that did a tour in London and liked it a lot, then did a tour in Norway and LOVED it after we all thought he was going to hate it and freeze his ass off.

you can pretty much guarantee that you're not going to go to Australia as a new guy with a general job skill. the better the job/duty position, the more people that you're competing with. not to mention that people don't always rotate out of those nice positions. If you're interested towards socom skills, you need to start training towards that now. physical fitness, mental aptitude...find some people that are already there and ask for tips. letting them know that you want it and are willing to do what it takes to get there will help your chances, but AU will still be a long ways off even if you do make it in.

Thats the cool thing about this job to get in you need a TS, aptitude test, and you interview for your specialty position within that field this is not a career field but a duty identifier for this job, we had a captain in my unit when I came to DC who was in the field he explained the situation and he had me speak to the career field manager. For the position that they are having me jump through hoops for you hub out of Australia, Florida, or Hawaii and the senior people in this field tend to raise their family's in Florida, and Hawaii as it was explained to me. And that those you go to AU TDY to turkey and some very shitty places like crazy.

Say you are a software developer, CISCO credentials, or have geology experience that is what you would apply for and do at a location specific for that specialty.

I really don't have any qualms about being stationed/ hubbing at one of those three locations.

My main concern was trying to put the final resume in for Hawaii or AU I wanted to feel out what AU was like due to the location is the AU versions of area 51.

If its already in motion then all you need to do is follow through. If you don't make it, they're not just going to turn you away unless you're a total fuck up. You'll get something to work on. Do it and come back for the next interview better than last time.
