Anyone got a title for an abandoned vehicle? - August 30, 2017, 05:49 PM

I've google searched. Got the basics. Just curious if anyone here has done it. Looking for some tips.

Long story short is guy left a truck at my friends shop. Been like 2 years. Called the owner every week for last year. No call back. He doesn't want to go deal with the mechanics lean stuff. Said I can have it. I want to get a title for it so I can legally drive it.

Vehicle is in MD. I'm a DC resident. If that matters.

Thanks

Since it was previously titled options are limited. I'd download the required form and fill it in. Write the required letter. Hand them to him to sign along with $100 bucks. Mail the certified letter, submit the form.

I've used the Virginia AVP to obtain a title. Very simple and easy. I'm not familiar with MD or DC though.

You can't arbitrarily take an old abandoned vehicle title and re-assign it to another vehicle by restamping the vehicle. That's 5 years minimum federal prison. The only way is a mechanic's lien/salvage or the state can issue their own vehicle identification number which is an even bigger pain in the ass. Do it the legal way, otherwise enjoy your vacation.
