Anyone know anything about upstate New York? - July 13, 2012, 10:49 AM

So as some of you know, I recently lost my job.. talked to a guy yesterday up in Albany, NY- they're flying me up next Tuesday for an in-person interview.

I know there are a lot of great roads up there, anyone know what the sportbike/ moorsickle scene is like?

I know it's cold.. the cold doesn't bother me much, and I like snow.

If any of you have lived there before, that would be a help. Thanks!

Danrivito was up there for about 3 years. He would know.

Adirondacks are pretty sweet. Upstate NY is beautiful in Summer and Fall. Winter is tough, and spring is wet. However, you can pick up a dirtbike and maybe a snowmobile and have a blast.

I have family in Utica, and a cousin lived in Albany for many years. One of his kids still lives there. Upper NY is very white with a heavy Old World influence. It's different up there--people in the cities are a bit more friendly. Get out into the countryside, and it get's very rednecky. But there are the Amish too. Big Amish contingency there. Again though, very white, except for urban black populations. I think being Asian up there would be an isolating experience.

I lived up there for over a year, in the adirondacks. The cops are awful, and the state of new York will do its best to take as much money as they can from you. It's not just cold, it's cold 8 months out of the year. There are some great roads in the mountains. Most of the roads are high speed sweepers, nothing like 211 or 33.

They don't have a huge amount of dirt trails, but they have a huge amount of trails for snowmobiles (no atv or bikes allowed). If you move to Albany, get a snowmobile and drive up to Lake Pleasant in Speculator, NY. The trail system there is incredible.

Ugh, no interest in snowmobiles really... heavy pigs.

I have seen a dirtbike setup with a track on the back though... that looked like fun.

Saying there's nothing up there like 33 makes me sad.. need to look at the maps more.

Cops are awful everywhere, they're not worse than Fairfax up there.

Boyo - can you shoot me a link to those groups?

Albany is a bit of an ugly city... i lived in Rochester, NY most my life. But you will find plenty of good roads just outside the city which is nice! No need to drive over an hour like around here..

No exaggeration. It's white as snow up there and pure 'Murrican too. Grad student in our lab is American-born Cantonese who did his undergrad at Cornell. When his friends visited him, they didn't even call when they got to town for specific directions. They found him when they saw the only late-model Japanese car in the neighborhood.

Went up to the Adirondacks with the Wild Hogs crew last year. We met up with a local off of FJR Forum and had a blast. Great riding from what I remember. Here is one road I remember loving:
