Assessed Value on property for tax purposes - August 16, 2011, 09:47 PM

I facking hate Arlington county .. This year they are assessing the value of a vehicle at almost double the price I bought it for last year! Is there a way to fight this? I have emailed these ass clowns today and hope they fix this shit .. if they are really this desperate to get money why don't they open a strip joint in courthouse .. will surely generate a lot of revenue and they wont have to go through this pathetic charade .. a$$holes

lol I just blew up last night at my arlington prop taxes, especially on my bike.

Arlington - 5%, prince william county, 3.7%. It's one thing to pay federal and state, but the county stuff pisses me off, even though thats school and law enforcement which are rather essential.

Great. We have 6 vehicles all registered in Arlington. This should be interesting when our bills start coming in.

Just an FYI, I have a friend who works in county property tax collection and he explained to me that comparing county tax rates is not the only metric for gaguing projected tax expense. Different counties use different vaulation methods/sources and what appears to be a low rate in Prince William is actually on par with fairfax county as they use one of the most generous (to the county that is) valuation methods.

I've heard that you can go in with your bill of sale and get them to adjust your vehicle value. I've never tried this....

Just wondering how?

Section 58.1-3503(A)(3) of the Code of Virginia specifies that for most vehicles, the value shall be taken from “a recognized pricing guide.” According to the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service with the University of Virginia, “For valuation of automobiles, all localities use the National Automobile Dealers’ Association’s Official Used Car Guide (NADA) as their primary valuation guide for cars and sport utility vehicles. When a vehicle is not listed in the primary guide, the locality obtains values from some other source. All cities and counties in Virginia levy this tax on motor vehicles.” In all Virginia localities, the Car Tax assessments are based on the value as of January 1st (Virginia Code, Section 58.1-3515).

DEEP:
Q. Upon what is my vehicle assessment based?
A. The Arlington County Commissioner of Revenue bases the assessment on values in recognized vehicle pricing guides, such as the N.A.D.A. Used Car Guide. The actual price you paid for the vehicle may be the basis for the assessment only if the vehicle is not listed in a pricing guide.

Appeal Process for the Vehicle Personal Property Tax : Appeal a Tax Assessment : Arlington, Virginia
How to File an Appeal
To file an appeal, you must have your vehicle individually appraised by an expert appraiser (e.g., car dealer, insurance appraiser, car auctioneer, automobile mechanic). This written appraisal must:

  • Be on the letterhead of the appraiser.
  • Include the name, address, phone number, and signature of the appraiser.
  • Describe the condition of the vehicle on January 1 of the tax year for which the assessment is being appealed.
  • List the specific conditions that make your vehicle worth less than the clean loan value listed in the N.A.D.A. guide (e.g., excessive rust, body damage, missing engine). Excess mileage alone is not a sufficient reason.
  • List each condition that existed on January 1 and the amount that condition contributed to the reduction in the clean loan value for that vehicle.

So if they go by bill of sale...

sell me your bike for $10 you can then buy it back for $8......

sure that works ....

you have a point if you debate FMV vs assessment not bill of sale. This is what DMV uses when you register your bike.

I just recall this from a conversation we had well over a year ago. We don't normally talk about tax collection .

In the meantime, what does NADA say the value of your vehicle is DEEP?

LOL, I hope not! FYI, not trolling. I am seriously wondering. I recently had some real estate tax issues that have yet to be sorted so I am always feeling like da man is trying to get me.

Tell me about it. I was paying $1900 in taxes for one vehicle in FFX county because they assessed its value at $59K even though I couldn't sell it for more than $40K if I was lucky! That assessment shit is bullshit. After two years of the same crap I moved the car to MD.

Ah, "clean" value. THAT is how they stick it in you. Bastards. DEEP, is this for your street bike? If not, report that thing sold! They don't know about the bikes I don't register
