Baby squirrels... wants one? What to do? - August 31, 2009, 07:58 AM

Hello all,

So I found baby squirrels in my attic over the weekend. There was a little hole between the wall and the roof which I think the mom squirrel used to get into the attic. There was a nest of 5 baby squirrels. I saw couple cables that were chewed up. So I closed the whole and took the baby squirrels. I hate to do this... I'm sure mom squirrels is going crazy.. but it was dangerous with all the live wires in the attic.
So, I've been feeding them milk all weekend and they love it. They don't even have teeth yet and they can't see very well. They are adorable and they love to get massages on their little heads, They fall sleep right away when I do that. Now I don't know what to do. My first thought is to call animal control but I'm just not sure what they are going to do with them.
Any of you want one? or know a good place I can call so they can take good care of them?

Where do you live again? I would recommend you NOT call animal control, but instead the U.S. Forest Service. If they are near by I know they will gladly take them off your hands and re-habitat them. You can't just let them go because of thier age

Agree with Guzz. I'd take them in if it wasn't for my dogs and the neighbor's cats. Call the Forest Service first or the state Dept of Natural Resources.

Do NOT give them anything with a lot of sugar. It will kill them.

Hey guys. I'm in the Tyson's Corner area. I'll do a little research and see if I can find a number for a forest service close by.

How hard is it to domesticate a squirrel?

You never fully domestic a squirrel. And when they get a little older, they think humans are trees and climb/chase one another all over you, so make sure you where jeans and THICK long sleeves, otherwise you're gonna have some serious scratches! They're cute little boogers, but eventually you have to return them to the wild - so, the sooner the better, before you get attached to them. Forest Service is the best idea.

I called the Wild Life rescue center and there is a message saying
"due to the high baby squirrel season all of our rescuers are at capacity. We can't take more baby squirrels"
They recommend to check with local vets and stuff to see if they would take them.
These babies need a good place. They need to eat every 5 hours or so and I"m at work all day.
Any ideas?

awww. brings me back to my youngling days.

i had a squirrrel when i was younger. and it was the coolest pet i ever had.
i had a drawer in my dresser that had a pillow in the back and seeds in the front. and it would sneak out at night and come sleep on my chest.

but yea they will tear up and curtains and your legs and arms when they run up you like a tree.

they used to grip onto my chocolate labs back and my dog would take off running around the house with the squirrel attached to his back. it was the funniest thing to watch.

some shit ass neighbor said that if we didnt return it to the wild she was gonna call some services on us. GAY!!!!!
so we took it to a place to have it re introduced to the wild.

I have a drink to celebrate the little things. Like Tuesdays - we only have one of those a week!

Did I say Wildlife Rescue Center? NO I SAID U.S. Forest Service. If you truly want to get rid of these critters drive to the front gate of Skyline Drive and ask for a ranger. Tell them you found them outside the gate down the road and aren't sure what to do with them but are worried they will get eaten by wildlife. They are Rangers. they do the job because they are passionate about wildlife and the outdoors, not the money. they will take them from you and re-habitat them. Trust me, they are tree huggers. it is in their blood. It is who they are. they think squirrels are family.

Its funny you bring this up. A friend of mine is a tree hugging, vegitarian, animal rights lover and is working (or is going to be working) with an organization to rescue, ironically enough...squirrles. I can talk to her if you want. She told me that she was going to be given some to take care of. Not sure if thats happend yet.

I just talked to her. Unfortunately she is at the beach and will not be starting until she returns. In the meantime, she said you can call the Wildlife Rescue League at 703-440-0800. Not sure if that is the place you already called. Considering you said they had a message specifically about baby squirrels, I am thinking it may be, but thought it was worth a shot.
