Best Home Surveillance Equipment? - November 10, 2011, 09:05 AM

So for the second time in 4 days, my truck has been broken into, only this time the alarm went off and I watched the getaway car scurry away. This is starting to get on my nerves because I used to think that I lived in a neighborhood where I didn't have to worry about this kind of crap. My truck was parked in my driveway almost completely under my carport so they had to walk up on the property to break in.

So I'm looking to pick up the most economical and reasonable surveillance equipment set. I know a couple people on here have talked about wireless cameras that transmit video to a computer or smartphone, so where's a good place to start looking for those and what in particular I should consider or avoid?

A sign posted on the front law that reads:
"This property protected by a shotgun three days a week. You guess which three."

Seriously, I'm not sure but I would like to find out myself. I've seen plenty of those home wireless multizone webcam security packages in a box, but have no idea what's the best one to get.

Thanks, Dutch. That's exactly the kind of idea I was looking for. Firepower is not the problem, the problem is that I have more to do than sit by my window all night waiting for something to happen.

Any other options out there? I have to mount this thing about 40' away from my truck so hopefully something with a lens powerful enough to get some sort of detail.

Costco has some motion sensor/video/flash type thing for $500 or so. Looks to be cheaper now...don't know how good it is, but like anything at Costco, if you don't like it return it!

I saw this the other day, not bad at all, quickest option is motion detector flood lights, you can pick those up at depot, lowes, walmart etc tonight and get the area lit up, anything you order is going to take time to get and install.

A motion activated security light will work wonders.

Find one that will operated with motion on your driveway (far enough away) and bright enough to blind people.

Might be too much but...

Or, instead of an alarm you can set something like this up to activate a light in your living room.

Viper alarm with a pager and motion detection. Silence the sounds and wait for the pager to go off.
