best way to start teaching a 12y/o html - August 27, 2011, 08:30 AM

so..
My kid wants to learn to make web pages..
She's 12 and pretty handy with a computer already..
Suggestions on how to get her able to build a website?
I would like it if she could start learning html.. and not just some graphic tool that builds a page. Also, any SW used must be FREE..

Thx..

I'd suggest first getting her dreamweaver or frontpage so she can first learn basic properties and styles. Once she learns how to use a GUI, she will on her own start tweaking the autogenerated code and go from there. I'd say in a year or so get her flash so she can learn some basic coding and integrate it into her html / javascript pages

Do the HTML tutorial listed above. Then show her Notepad or a similar text procesing program. If she does it all by hand she will understand what is going on. HTML of static web pages is a good first step.

After that...you need to understand other things...databases, etc. That will take a lot more time.

And you are *supposed* to be technical. What's up with that???

Agreed with both. Doing it from scratch in a simple text editor (Notepad+ is King) is the best route to take.

Start her with "notepad.exe" ... and a book.

Get the basics so she knows what's happening under the hood of the 4GL programs.

Dreamweaver is very appealing to a young learner because it shows the layout as u go along (kids dont wanna see code all day). i used it when i was a teenager and one day i clicked into code view and found it very cool. I started exploring what code does what to a page, then started modifying my myspace page. Thats when i picked software engineering as my major and thats what i do for a living today.

But yea, actually seeing the gui full time is what made it easy for me to like it as a kid.

For straight HTML editing I prefer TextPad - the text editor for Windows over Notepad. It's also free.

Notepad++ or if you want a freeware version of dreamweaver get Aptana Studio.
