BEWARE of hidden gas fees! - July 9, 2008, 03:35 PM

Just saw this video on the front page of yahoo. I never heard of this before, and admit to not ever checking my receipt. That habit is going to quickly change!

never noticed that but most of the time i dont ask for a reciept when i use my check card at the pump. I use the cc feature so i dont get hit with a debt fee from the station/bank.

I know you can't mandate minimum amounts for credit purchases without losing your merchant license. I don't know why this is acceptable. Some aren't just charging extra to pay merchant fees, they are making profit.

Section 167 of the Federal Truth In Lending Act states:
"No seller in any sales transaction may impose a surcharge on a cardholder who elects to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check or similar means.
However, it also states "businesses are allowed by law to offer a discount for purchases made by cash or check".
What this means is: A retailer cannot charge a credit card customer more for an item than its advertised price. If the price per gallon on the sign out front states "$4.31/ gal" you as a credit customer CAN NOT be charged more.
My wife and I have challenged several retailers (Sunoco, Irish Walk, American Tap Room) and recieved refunds of the overcharged amount.
Another misconception is the "Minimum credit card charge" at retailers. this is also a lie. As well, by Federal Law, retailers may not require minimum purchases for credit charges. Same rules apply, as they can offer a discount to cash customers, but only on the advertized price.

Yea you can use a credit card for a $.05 purchase...or even .01, if a merchant tells you that you need to spend atleas XX amount, you can contact Visa and they will get fined or might even lose the right to process.
