Black History: American blues - February 5, 2011, 03:13 PM

Here’s a little Black History post from .Net’s resident racist, Fitz! Tagged for great justice.

This topic personally has a lot of significance for me as a musician. Many of my influences are white, but THEIR influences in many cases were black. Were it not for the southern/delta blues players of way back when, modern rock would not exist. In fact, any guitarist who frequently wails in the minor pentatonic with a ♯4th / flat 5th degree added owes that scale to the blues movement.

It’s not known if the addition of the #4th degree (the blues note) was added to the scale purposefully or not. It’s a scale that doesn’t make much tonal sense, and is in every sense a passing note. Starting or finishing on it produces an awkward tonality, and it’s the “mistake” quality that gave the delta blues it’s distinctive feel.

Anywho, when moving out here from Texas, I decided to see some of the sights.

It’s assumed that highway 61/49 intersection is the place where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil for blues greatness, but that’s likely just a tourist trap established long after. Most of the other folklore says it was within reasonable walking distance from Dockery Farms, which makes sense since Johnson likely didn’t have too many friends with cars. While musicians working in the area sometimes played in the area’s juke joints, the more common gigging locations were barber shops and street corners in the area. The Dockery plantation and its surrounding area was a hotbed of American blues activity. Here’s some more info: Untitled Page

Here’s some photos of my trip there. We walked to a few crossroads near the area that could have been Johnson’s famous location. No one really knows which one it is.

Good post. I see the those racial sensitivity courses you were mandated to take after your last little outburst, are working.

Lol @ the tags.

Because they look at the thread creator and probably think:

That is one of my favorite areas of the state. Lots of good memories of fishing with dad up there.

Jesus...

Stillie posting in a thread without a kitchen reference, funny picture, or mom joke.

That's it... the internet is over.

We can all go home now.
