http://www.racer.com/report-baltimor...rticle/169505/

The Associated Press is reporting that Baltimore, Md., city officials approved a contract Wednesday with local investors for a Baltimore Grand Prix, to be run in August, 2011. The Indy Racing League is expected to sign a sanctioning agreement for the event in the next two weeks, according to the AP.

The race would be run on a temporary circuit around downtown, passing by the Inner Harbor and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. According to the AP's report, the city has approved using $7.75 million in state and federal grants to make necessary road improvements for the race.

I was at both days of that race. The fuggin track is still there, raised curbing and all. Infuriates me everytime I go past it knowing with a few enhancements it could be a perfect weekend auto-x track!

Just in case anyone wanted to know the difference like I did between...INDY and F1...up until today I thought the term was used interchangably....

There are a lot of differences, but generally speaking, Indy cars are bigger, faster and more durable whereas F1 cars are more agile and accelerate faster. An F1 car is slower on the straights but much quicker in the corners. The engine has less horsepower but the power comes on quicker and because a Formula One car is lighter and more responsive it
reacts faster to the driver's input and the braking is much better.

Other differences:

Turbo charging
This is banned in F1 but still allowed in Indy.

Brakes
F1 cars use carbon fibre brakes which are lighter and
more durable than the steel brakes used by Indy cars.

Weight
F1 cars minimum weight is 585 kg (1,287 lbs). Indy car
minimum weight is 1,550 lbs (704.5 kg).

Ground effect
In F1, the downforce that a car generates is limited by requiring flat bottoms between the wheels (now with 50mm step). In Indycar shaped ground effect tunnels are allowed, but with strictly controlled
dimensions and at a minimum height above the bottom of the
chassis.

Tracks
Indy uses ovals as well as road and street courses - F1 uses only race tracks, with the exception of the Monaco street circuit.

Nationality
Indy is basically a domestic U.S. series as far as
teams, venues and drivers are concerned. However, there are 3
venues outside of the U.S. (Surfer's Paradise, Brazil, Toronto
and Vancouver) and an increasing number of foreign drivers. F1
is truly international in teams, engines, venues and drivers
although there is a strong European influence, particularly
British and Italian.
Comments
  • Good answer, although I think there is a street circuit in Canada that has been used. by The Leningrad Cowboy on January 14th, 2005
